Metropolitan Police Department investigators are asking for the public's help identifying three people connected to a theft at a Georgetown store, releasing images from the incident as they work to track down suspects. The case adds to a string of retail crime reports that have rattled merchants along the neighborhood's busiest shopping strips in recent years.
According to WJLA, MPD is crediting the images accompanying its public appeal to its own department, though the outlet's report did not specify the store involved or the date of the theft. Georgetown falls under MPD's Second District, headquartered on Idaho Avenue NW, per the Metropolitan Police Department.
A Corridor Already on Edge
This latest search for suspects follows a pattern local officials have been tracking closely. MPD Second District officials told an Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2E meeting in November 2024 that retail thefts along Georgetown's M Street and Wisconsin Avenue commercial corridors had hit a four-year high, with 56 thefts recorded in October 2024 alone, a 27 percent jump over the same period the prior year, according to The Wash.
The neighborhood's retailers have absorbed some costly hits since then. Six masked suspects raided an Alo Yoga storefront in Georgetown on June 30, making off with an estimated $20,000 worth of luxury apparel, the station's report notes. Then in May 2026, MPD launched a public search after someone hurled a beer keg through the front display window of Georgetown Cupcake on M Street NW, causing an estimated $10,000 in damage while employees were inside, as Hoodline reported at the time.
The Legal and Financial Stakes
Under the Secure DC Omnibus Amendment Act, which the D.C. Council passed in March 2024, first-degree felony theft applies to property valued at $1,000 or more, with thefts aggregated over a six-month period. The law was designed to strengthen penalties and clarify felony theft parameters as property crime pressure on District retailers mounted.
Retail theft has been a focus of discussion among Georgetown officials.
Public Safety Concerns Beyond Shoplifting
Theft isn't the only public safety issue that has touched Georgetown's retail corridors recently. In September, MPD investigated an armed carjacking on the 1200 block of Wisconsin Avenue NW near Prospect Street involving two teenage suspects, Hoodline previously reported. The incident unfolded blocks from the retail strip where shoppers and store employees have grown accustomed to periodic crime alerts.
MPD is asking the public to help identify the three people sought in the Georgetown store theft.
The latest search for suspects underscores how property crime remains a concern for neighborhood merchants.
