Desi Comedy Fest is closing out its 2026 nationwide tour with four shows across Ontario, Hollywood, and Irvine from Thursday, November 5 through Sunday, November 8, bringing a lineup of South Asian comedians to Southern California stages just as Diwali celebrations get underway. The run marks the final stop on a touring schedule that has already taken the festival through New York, Boston, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Chicago, six San Francisco Bay Area cities, and three Texas cities this year.
The festival kicks off its Southern California swing at the Ontario Improv on Thursday, November 5 at 8 p.m., with Ahmed Bharoocha, Rajiv Satyal, Pallavi Gunalan, and DJ Sandhu joining co-founders Samson Koletkar and Abhay Nadkarni, according to a press release distributed through El Paso Times. The tour then moves to the Hollywood Improv for a pair of shows on Friday, November 6 — a 7:30 p.m. set featuring Kiran Deol, Feraz Ozel, Zahra Ali, and Shilpa Das, followed by a 9:30 p.m. show with Pardis Parker, Zahid Dewji, and Aliya Kanani. The tour's final stop lands at the Irvine Improv on Sunday, November 8 at 6 p.m., with Fizaa Dosani, Shaman Johal, and Priya Puram rounding out the bill.
That Irvine finale falls squarely on Diwali, with the main Lakshmi Puja observance set for Sunday, November 8 and the five-day observance beginning Friday, November 6, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. It's a scheduling overlap that puts the tour's closing night right in the middle of one of the South Asian diaspora's biggest holiday weekends, in a region with one of the country's largest Indian American populations — Los Angeles County alone is home to roughly 111,000 Indian Americans and Orange County to about 63,000, per 2020 U.S. Census Bureau figures cited by PMC.
From Bay Area Sold-Out Shows to a National Tour
Desi Comedy Fest traces back to 2014, when Koletkar and Nadkarni launched it with four sold-out shows in the San Francisco Bay Area, per the El Paso Times release. The idea had roots a year earlier, when Koletkar set out to ease tensions between Indian and Pakistani communities through comedy, bringing Indian and Pakistani comedians together for shows timed around their countries' independence days, which fall one day apart. Hoodline covered the festival's early growth back in 2016, when it brought 50 South Asian comedians representing Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jewish, and LGBT identities to Northern California stages during its 2016 run.
Since then, the festival has featured more than 200 comedians, entertained nearly 20,000 attendees, and presented shows in more than 30 cities across three countries, according to the El Paso Times release. It even landed a spot at Just For Laughs Vancouver in 2024. Nadkarni has summed up the festival's mission simply: laughing together in a comedy club, he's said, is more fun than arguing with strangers.
Two Founders, Two Comedy Résumés
Koletkar, who was born in Mumbai and now performs internationally as Mahatma Moses, has been dubbed the Indian Seinfeld by The Indian Express. His You're Funny But You Don't Look Jewish tour played more than 40 shows across the United States and Canada. Outside the festival, Koletkar also founded Comedy Oakland in May 2009, an independent venue-friendly showcase that now produces more than 200 shows a year and has won Best Comedy Night seven times in the East Bay Express Readers' Poll, per East Bay Magazine.
Nadkarni, a Hindu third-culture kid who grew up between Delhi, Doha, and Bangalore, was named a Just For Laughs New Face.
A Lineup Built From Late-Night and Streaming Credits
The Southern California bill is stacked with performers carrying national television and streaming credits. Ahmed Bharoocha, who is half Pakistani and half Irish, has appeared on Conan and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Feraz Ozel has also appeared on Conan, while Zahid Dewji previously wrote for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Kiran Deol, an Indian American comedian with Punjabi roots who was born in England and raised in Florida, joins Shaman Johal, a Nicaraguan-Indian-American comedian who has appeared on Laughs on Fox.
Other acts bring international festival pedigree: Fizaa Dosani has performed at the Netflix Is a Joke Festival, DJ Sandhu has played the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Aliya Kanani has appeared at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Pallavi Gunalan pursued stand-up after a prior career in biomedical engineering, and Rajiv Satyal has performed on all seven continents. All festival performances are conducted in English.
Beyond the Three Announced Cities
The Southern California leg actually reaches further than Ontario, Hollywood, and Irvine. The tour also includes a downtown San Diego stop at The Yellow Door Comedy Club on Saturday, November 7, according to The National Law Review, rounding out a swing through the Inland Empire, Hollywood, Orange County, and San Diego. Before arriving in California, the 2026 tour played The Creek and The Cave in Austin on October 15, after stops in three Texas cities earlier that year, pairing national headliners with local Austin talent, as reported by Austin OTL Seat Fillers.
Samson Koletkar is listed as the press contact for Desi Comedy Fest in the release distributed by the El Paso Times through EIN Presswire.
