Gustavo Reyes and his team broke ground this week on a sixth location of Gustavo's Mexican Grill, a 9,000-square-foot restaurant planned for Terra Crossing Boulevard in East Louisville. The milestone caps a journey that began in 1999, when Reyes arrived from Guadalajara, Mexico, and took a job washing dishes in a Nicholasville restaurant kitchen.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg publicly celebrated the groundbreaking, writing in a post on X that Reyes is an incredible success story
, noting that he immigrated to the country, started as a dishwasher, and worked his way up to starting his own business. According to the mayor's post, Gustavo's Mexican Grill now employs around 250 people and has grown to five Louisville-area locations before this latest expansion. Reyes calls Louisville home, per the same post.
The new Terra Crossing Boulevard site, according to Louisville Business First, sits within a rapidly expanding commercial retail center in East Louisville. Reyes spent over a decade working both back-of-house and front-of-house restaurant jobs in Kentucky before launching his own venture, according to Louisville Tourism.
From Nicholasville Dishwasher to Crestwood Founder
Reyes opened the original Gustavo's Mexican Grill in Crestwood, Kentucky, in October 2010, after years of saving earnings from entry-level restaurant jobs, according to the Better Business Bureau. The Crestwood restaurant was his first location. From there, the company expanded across Jefferson and Oldham counties, building out five locations, per the company's own website.
Earlier this year, Gustavo's Mexican Grill opened an 11,000-square-foot flagship location in Norton Commons, a multi-level buildout that includes an adults-only third-floor bar called the Tahona Lounge, according to Louisville Tourism. The flagship is a larger, multi-floor space.
A Lager Named for the Founder
In 2020, he partnered with Louisville's Goodwood Brewing to launch Vida De Reyes, a custom Mexican lager with jalapeño notes that's now served at all of the company's restaurants and sold at local beverage retailers, according to Untappd.
Why East Louisville, and Why Now
Terra Crossing Boulevard sits along the Old Henry Road corridor near Interstate 265, a commercial development anchored by Kentucky's first-to-market Publix supermarket, Galen College of Nursing, Thornton's headquarters, UofL Health and Baptist Medical Campus, according to listing data from Crexi. The corridor has seen continued growth in recent years. The trade area immediately around the new site features an average annual household income exceeding $180,000 within three miles and serves more than 120,000 residents within a five-mile radius, the same listing shows.
Hoodline reported last month on Mayor Greenberg spotlighting a local food truck business opening its first storefront in Old Louisville.
