A Dodge SUV caught fire on the Garden State Parkway in Clark Township early Monday morning. Everyone riding in it had gotten out before firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported.
The Clark Fire Department and New Jersey State Police were called to the highway shortly after 6:30 a.m., according to Patch. The department's dispatch time was approximately 6:33 a.m. Monday, according to Shore News Network.
Firefighters arrived to find the SUV burning, while its occupants were already out of the vehicle. Engine 1 and Engine 4 crews used hose lines to extinguish the fire, Shore News Network reported. The Clark Fire Department said no one was injured.
What Remains Unknown
Several details about Monday's fire have not been made public. The fire department did not say how many people had been inside the SUV or identify its owner. The cause has not been released and remains under investigation, according to the same report.
The precise location on the Parkway is also unclear. Patch placed the fire on the northbound Parkway at milepost 135.4 in Clark Township. Shore News Network reported that the Clark Fire Department did not specify a mile marker or direction of travel, or provide details about lane closures or delays. It has also not been confirmed whether another vehicle was involved.
Fire Data and Safety Guidance
A U.S. Fire Administration analysis of highway vehicle fires from 2014 to 2016 found that investigators determined no cause in 23 percent of cases. That national finding does not establish what caused the Clark fire. For a vehicle fire, the agency advises getting everyone out and safely away, not re-entering to retrieve belongings, and calling 911 or the local emergency number.
Clark's Stretch of the Parkway Has Seen This Before
Monday's fire is not the first time flames have broken out along this particular corridor. In April 2025, a multi-vehicle crash and car fire snarled the northbound Parkway in Clark just north of Exit 135, blocking three of the five northbound lanes and backing up traffic, according to NJ.com. A witness told the outlet that at least four vehicles were involved in that crash.
More recently, in May 2026, a separate vehicle fire blocked three right lanes on the southbound Parkway south of Exit 135 near Central Avenue in Clark Township. That fire was reported at approximately 1:13 p.m. and also backed up traffic through the area, according to Daily Voice. No connection has been established between these earlier incidents and Monday's fire, but the stretch has proven to be a recurring trouble spot for drivers passing through Clark.
