A 40-year-old Doña Ana County woman has been sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to a string of burglaries and stolen property charges connected to a storage facility break-in that investigators say also tied her to roughly $16,000 in stolen coins. Victoria Cabrales will serve three consecutive three-year terms across three separate cases, the result of a guilty plea covering two counts of burglary, two counts of conspiracy to commit burglary and one count of receiving stolen property.

Deputies Catch Cabrales at the Scene of a Trespassing Call

According to KFOX, Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a trespassing report at a storage facility on February 5 and found Cabrales and an accomplice at a unit. The pair claimed the unit belonged to them, but they couldn't produce a working key, and investigators spotted a blowtorch along with two locks that appeared to have been cut. The storage facility's owner later confirmed to deputies that Cabrales and the other person did not have permission to enter.

Deputies then discovered several other units at the same facility with locks cut by a torch, the station's report notes. Inside, they recovered stolen firearms, jewelry, money, electronics, power tools and collectibles. Cabrales went on to admit that she and her accomplice had broken into additional units at another storage facility days earlier, according to the same account.

A Separate Coin Case Added to the Charges

Cabrales was also wanted in a separate case involving about $16,000 in stolen coins, per the report. Investigators learned in January that she had the coins and said she sold several of them to local pawn shops, though they were initially unable to locate her. Doña Ana County District Attorney Fernando Macias announced that Cabrales entered a global plea agreement covering the burglary and stolen property cases, which combined into the nine-year sentence handed down with the terms running consecutively.

Storage-Unit Burglaries Are Not Unique to Doña Ana County

Storage facilities have proven an appealing target for burglars elsewhere in the country, too. In Wisconsin, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported that Breanna List-Kimball was sentenced to two years in prison after a series of eight storage-unit burglaries across Oconto County and nearby areas in April and May 2020 that netted thousands of dollars in stolen goods. She pleaded no contest to two burglary counts along with felony and misdemeanor bail jumping, and a judge ordered concurrent two-year prison terms with two years of extended supervision, plus a consecutive nine-month jail term for the misdemeanor bail jumping count.

Property crime remains a persistent issue in Doña Ana County. Data from crimeexplorer.com shows the county recorded 30,819 property crimes between 2019 and 2024, even though its average property crime rate of 145.3 per 100,000 residents sits 11.2% below the national average.
