Firefighters rescued several people from a burning home on Kerwin Street in Dorchester Saturday morning after getting word that residents were trapped upstairs with flames burning below them. A second alarm went out within minutes as crews worked to pull people to safety from a rear porch.
According to Boston 25 News, crews responded to 24 Kerwin Street after receiving reports of people trapped upstairs by a fire burning below them, a call from Boston Fire that sent additional units racing to the scene. Several people were rescued from a rear porch as firefighters pushed to get ahead of the flames, the station reported.
As reported by WHDH, the home is a triple-decker, and crews responding around 8 a.m. worked quickly to rescue people who were trapped on the second floor. The station reported that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Second Alarm Called Within Minutes
Firefighters ordered a second alarm within minutes of arriving at the scene, according to the same Boston 25 News report, a sign of how quickly the situation escalated as crews worked to clear the building. Information about injuries was not immediately available, the outlet noted.
The Kerwin Street fire is the latest in a string of residential blazes to hit Dorchester this year. A fire at a two-family home on Schuyler Street in July displaced 11 residents and sent one child to the hospital, according to The Boston Globe. That building was evacuated after its roof eventually collapsed, forcing firefighters to fight the flames from outside rather than inside the structure.
What Remains Unknown
In the Schuyler Street case, a Boston Fire Department spokesperson described the hospitalized child's injuries as minor, the Globe reported. No comparable injury details have been released for Saturday's fire on Kerwin Street, and it remains unclear how the blaze started. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
