Boston police are asking the public to help identify an individual suspected of taking several jackets from the Old Navy at 430 Washington Street. Detectives say the October larceny may be connected to earlier incidents at the nearby Gap, but have not confirmed that the same person was responsible.
Old Navy Theft Reported a Day Later
The Old Navy theft took place on October 13 and was reported the following day. Newport Dispatch reported that District A-1 officers received word of the larceny at about 3:15 p.m. on October 14. The Boston Police Department’s community alert likewise says officers were notified Wednesday, October 14, about a theft at the Washington Street store the day before, according to Newport Dispatch and Boston Police Department.
The Boston Police Department’s alert includes images of the individual it wants help identifying. Detectives say the Old Navy case may be connected to thefts at the Gap at 411 Washington Street. The alert lists three dates for those incidents: August 21, August 24 and August 26. The possible link is a police assessment, not a confirmed identification, according to Boston Police Department.
A Pattern on Washington Street
The Washington Street cases are not the only recent retail-larceny appeal in District A-1. In a separate incident, two male suspects stole four Versace gift sets from Macy’s at 450 Washington Street on April 21, 2026, police said. Detectives later asked the public to help identify the suspects, according to Boston Police Department.
The Old Navy and Gap stores are both on Washington Street, within the Downtown Crossing shopping corridor. Whether the October theft and the August incidents involved the same person remains unresolved; police have described the cases as potentially connected.
What Citywide Larceny Data Show
The available year-end figures provide a citywide benchmark, not a District A-1 comparison: City of Boston data show total larceny rose from 10,312 incidents in 2023 to 11,109 in 2024, an 8% increase. That broad category does not establish a shoplifting trend or speak specifically to the Downtown Crossing cases, according to the City of Boston.
District A-1 Larceny Figures
Boston Police Department figures list 1,325 “Other Larceny” incidents in District A-1 from January 1 through December 7, 2024, and 1,313 over the same dates in 2025. The figures are preliminary, and “Other Larceny” is a broad category, not a retail-theft count, so they do not establish a trend in shoplifting or address the Downtown Crossing cases, according to Boston Police Department.
How to Submit a Tip
District A-1 detectives are actively investigating the thefts and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Tipsters can reach detectives directly at (617) 343-4248, or submit information anonymously through Boston's CrimeStoppers program by calling 1-800-494-TIPS or texting the word TIP to CRIME (27463). Police have not said whether any arrests have been made in connection with either the Old Navy or Gap incidents.
