Three weekends of Día de los Muertos programming kick off Friday at El Paso's Downtown Visitor Center, with organizers inviting residents to honor lost pets, public figures, and family members through themed photo displays and evening gatherings at Civic Center Plaza. The celebration runs through November 1, giving the city's flagship holiday tradition an extended, multi-stop presence downtown this fall.
Destination El Paso, the city's official destination marketing and venue management division operating under Legends Global, will host the series at the Downtown Visitor Center, located at 1 Civic Center Plaza, according to KFOX14/CBS4. The organization also manages municipal venues such as the Judson F. Williams Convention Center, per Destination El Paso.
Each weekend carries its own theme, per the KFOX14/CBS4 report. The first, running Friday and Saturday, is titled “Pawprints on Our Hearts” and centers on remembering pets. The second weekend, October 23-24, is “Stars Remembered,” honoring public figures, while the third, October 30 through November 1, is “Always With Us,” dedicated to family members and friends.
Hours Vary Across the Three Weekends
The celebration follows a consistent weekly rhythm, open Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 10 p.m., the station's report notes. Sunday, November 1, closes out the series with hours from 2 to 7 p.m. A special Halloween slot falls in between, with the event open Saturday, October 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Destination El Paso invited community members to contribute a framed photo, no larger than 4 by 6 inches, of a loved one for display as part of the celebration, according to the same account. The photo drop-off deadline had already passed by October 9. Vendors interested in participating were directed to reach out to [email protected].
A Season Already Full of Remembrance
The Visitor Center series lands in the middle of an already packed Día de los Muertos calendar for El Paso. The city's 9th annual Día de los Muertos Desfile & Festival, co-organized by the Mexican American Cultural Center and the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department, takes place Saturday, October 24, and routinely draws more than 50,000 visitors to the Downtown Arts District with a mile-long parade featuring more than 60 entries; the festival also features ballet folklorico performers and invites alebrijes.
That flagship festival follows the March 2025 opening of the $15 million, 41,000-square-foot Mexican American Cultural Center, a project that fulfilled a 2012 voter-approved Quality of Life bond measure to create a permanent home for borderland traditions, according to KTEP. The facility includes exhibition spaces, performance venues, and culinary teaching kitchens. The historic El Paso Streetcar offers free rides.
Also on the calendar that month, Historic Concordia Cemetery, a 52-acre burial ground holding more than 60,000 graves, was scheduled to host a community Día de los Muertos celebration on October 10, with planned high school mariachi competitions and Catrina costume contests, as Hoodline previously reported. The cemetery holds designated Historic Texas Cemetery status.
Why the Holiday Resonates So Deeply Here
Why the Holiday Resonates So Deeply Here El Paso's Día de los Muertos calendar includes observances across multiple events rather than a single gathering.
The holiday's roots run deep beyond the border region, too. UNESCO inscribed Día de los Muertos on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008, recognizing traditions that trace back to pre-Columbian Mesoamerican agricultural rites later fused with European Catholic customs. The recognition situates El Paso's layered calendar of parades, cemetery visits, and now a three-weekend photo tribute series within a much older cultural lineage.
The Downtown Visitor Center's programming adds to a fall calendar of cultural events across downtown. Together, the events point to a downtown cultural calendar that stretches across multiple weekends each fall rather than clustering around a single holiday weekend.
