A proposed speakeasy on South Main Street in downtown Memphis is looking to add beer to its menu, with city regulators set to weigh in this week. Lou’s Speakeasy has submitted a beer permit application covering its lounge, seating areas, and outdoor patio at 525 S. Main St., according to paperwork tied to an upcoming city meeting.
The application, filed on behalf of Lou’s Speakeasy, seeks approval to sell beer for on-premise consumption at the South Main Street address, as reported by WhatNow. The Memphis Alcohol Commission has placed the request on its October 7 meeting agenda, per the outlet. That agency is the body charged with administering the city’s beer-sale laws and approving retail liquor locations, according to the Memphis Alcohol Commission.
What the Permit Would Cover
The submitted paperwork lays out a fairly expansive footprint for the proposed business. The permit-covered areas include the interior premises at 525 S. Main Street, the Lou’s Speakeasy lounge, customer seating, food-service and beverage-service areas, and an adjoining outdoor patio, the WhatNow report notes.
That scope suggests Lou’s Speakeasy is positioning itself as a full-service spot rather than a bar-only operation. The same paperwork indicates the establishment will serve both food and drinks, pairing a kitchen menu with whatever beer selection ultimately gets approved.
A Routine Stop on the Commission’s Calendar
Getting on the October 7 agenda is a standard procedural step for any Memphis business hoping to sell beer. The Alcohol Commission meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month, per its own board page, which means this week’s session is simply the next regularly scheduled opportunity for the commission to take up new applications like this one.
Beyond the filing itself and its place on the agenda, the available paperwork doesn’t say much else about Lou’s Speakeasy. There’s no word yet on who’s behind the business, when or whether it might open its doors, or what the menu or pricing might look like once it’s up and running on South Main Street.
