A security guard working the downtown railyard was charged with misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury after a 20-year-old man was left with a fractured face, a brain contusion and a possible brain bleed following a confrontation after Nebraska's away football game against Oregon. A friend told Officer Cody Ramsey that they had been leaving the railyard when security shouted something behind them. Nearby camera footage allegedly captured the guard chasing him down and knocking him to the pavement.
According to the Omaha World-Herald, the incident happened around 1:45 a.m. as fans were clearing out of the railyard following Nebraska's road game against Oregon in Eugene, which had taken place that night. A friend told Officer Cody Ramsey that they had been leaving when security shouted something behind them. The 20-year-old believes the confrontation may have started after he carried a beverage past a sign reading “no alcohol beyond this area.”
The venue’s alcohol boundaries are part of how the district is organized. The Railyard was promoted as Nebraska’s first entertainment district, with businesses sharing a fenced courtyard where drinks could be carried within a designated area. That setup provides context for the reported dispute over a beverage and a no-alcohol sign; it does not establish what happened in this encounter. KETV’s description of the district notes the shared courtyard and designated drinking area.
The Railyard is in Lincoln, not Omaha: it is part of the city’s West Haymarket district. Lincoln’s downtown plan describes the area’s redevelopment around Pinnacle Bank Arena and the Railyard entertainment district, with those major projects completed by 2013. That location matters here because Bryan West Campus and the named entertainment district are both in Lincoln. Lincoln’s downtown plan places the Railyard in the West Haymarket redevelopment.
Police camera footage from the area reportedly showed the guard chasing the man, grabbing his jacket with one hand and swinging his other arm over the man's shoulder in a motion that sent him to the ground, the same report notes. The left side of the man's head could allegedly be seen bouncing off the pavement during the fall.
Man Fell a Second Time
No footage showed the guard returning to provide medical aid, and the footage is said to show the man eventually being dragged off the street by several bystanders who helped him back to his feet, per the same report. The man reportedly stumbled and fell a second time before he ultimately sought medical attention later that Sunday.
The injuries turned out to be serious. The man sustained a facial fracture near his left eye along with a brain contusion and may have suffered a small brain bleed, the outlet reports, in addition to scrapes and bruises across his face, shoulder and knees. Officer Cody Ramsey made contact with the man in the emergency room at Bryan West Campus to begin piecing together what had happened at the railyard.
Charge Filed Days After Investigators Reached Out
Investigators contacted the security guard a few days after the incident as part of their inquiry, and the guard agreed to turn himself in. Prosecutors ultimately charged him Friday with misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury, the Omaha World-Herald reports.
Nebraska law defines third-degree assault to include intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury, and classifies it as a Class I misdemeanor. The statute provides legal context for the misdemeanor charge described in this case; it does not determine guilt, which remains for the court to decide. Nebraska’s third-degree assault statute sets out those elements and the offense classification.
