A driver was killed and another was hospitalized Saturday night after a two-vehicle crash shut down Lake Mead Parkway near the Lake Las Vegas entrance, prompting Henderson police to close the roadway in both directions as investigators worked the scene. Officers were dispatched to the crash around 8:25 p.m., according to police.

The collision happened on Lake Mead Parkway about half a mile east of the Lake Las Vegas entrance, according to 8NewsNow. One driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition, police said. Each vehicle involved had only one occupant, with no passengers in either car.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that no further information was available about the hospitalized driver's condition as of Saturday night. Police have not released the identities of either driver, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Road Closed in Both Directions

Lake Mead Parkway was closed in both directions between Lake Las Vegas Parkway and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area entrance station while officers investigated, per the station's report. Investigators advised drivers to avoid the area and plan alternate routes while the roadway remained shut down.

A Stretch of Road With a History of Deadly Crashes

While this crash occurred near Lake Las Vegas, a different stretch of road in the Henderson area, the intersection of Lake Mead Boulevard and Lamont Street, has drawn scrutiny for a pattern of serious collisions in recent years. That intersection has recorded 27 crashes in just over six years, including three fatal collisions, with incidents occurring nearly every year since 2020, according to News 3 Las Vegas. In 2024 alone, six crashes were reported at that intersection between February and August, including one fatal crash in May.

The most recent fatal crash at Lake Mead Boulevard and Lamont Street happened on Feb. 7, 2026, when a suspected impaired driver struck and killed 17-year-old Eric Estrada-Jimenez in a marked crosswalk, News 3 Las Vegas reported. Police said Mark Clayton, 65, was driving a motor home when he hit the teen, and Clayton now faces five felony charges, including DUI resulting in death. In response to the pattern of crashes, the Nevada Department of Transportation has proposed upgrading school-zone flashers and installing flashing beacons to warn drivers about pedestrians in the crosswalk, and a larger Lake Mead Boulevard improvement project is about 60 percent designed, with final design anticipated by July 2028 and construction potentially beginning in 2029.

Henderson has seen other deadly crashes along Lake Mead Parkway in recent years. A suspected DUI crash on Jan. 7, 2024, killed a mother and her two young sons at Lake Mead Parkway and Grand Cadence Drive, just east of Boulder Highway, News 3 Las Vegas reported. Police arrested Darryl Smith in that case on suspicion of three counts of DUI resulting in death and one count of reckless driving resulting in death.

No arrests or charges have been announced in connection with Saturday's crash near Lake Las Vegas, and the investigation remains ongoing.
