A driver died at the scene Monday evening after a single-vehicle crash on westbound I-94 near mile marker 68 in Kalamazoo County, close to the Mattawan area on the Van Buren County line. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office responded around 5:40 p.m. to find the vehicle's sole occupant already dead. Investigators have not released the driver's identity or said what caused the crash.

According to WZZM 13, the stretch of highway where the crash occurred sits near Mattawan and Texas Township, right along the Kalamazoo County border. FOX 17 West Michigan News reports that deputies are still investigating and have asked anyone with information to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said speed was not believed to be a factor. Authorities have not said whether weather or a medical emergency played a role.

A Deadly Week Along the Same Corridor

The crash came five days after another fatal incident on the same westbound interstate corridor. A man was struck and killed while standing in a travel lane on westbound I-94 near Watervliet in neighboring Berrien County, as Hoodline previously reported. In that case, authorities had not immediately identified the victim.

It also isn't the first time a solo-vehicle wreck has proven fatal on I-94 through Kalamazoo County. Hoodline reported in January 2025 that a 37-year-old Richland woman died when her car veered off the road and rolled on I-94, an incident that also closed westbound lanes during the investigation. Michigan Traffic Crash Facts data from 2023 shows single-vehicle collisions accounted for nearly half of all fatal crashes statewide that year, 46.6 percent, even though they made up just over a third of total reported crashes.

Statewide Traffic Trends

Michigan traffic deaths declined in the first half of 2025, though full-year data were not final.

Crash Reporting

Qualifying crash reports are submitted using the UD-10 format, and the data supports a statewide crash database.

For now, the cause of Monday's crash remains under investigation, and the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office had notified the driver's family but withheld the victim's name from public release. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office continues to seek information from anyone who may have witnessed the crash.
