A person was ejected from a vehicle in a two-car crash on Interstate 91 South in Windsor Thursday evening, and the highway was shut down for hours while Connecticut State Police investigated. The person was taken to Hartford Hospital, and the scene remained active well into the night as crews worked to clear the roadway.
According to WTNH, two vehicles were involved in the crash, and the injured person was transported to Hartford Hospital. WTNH reported that police did not comment on the extent of the injuries. NBC Connecticut also reported serious injuries in the October 1, 2026, crash. The Connecticut Post also reported that the person suffered serious injuries in the crash.
Responders Descend on the Scene
Multiple Connecticut State Police units responded to the crash, and Windsor Emergency Medical Services handled the transport to Hartford Hospital, according to the Connecticut Post. WFSB reported that the driver was taken to Hartford Hospital and that the scene remained active and under investigation as crews worked the closure. The Connecticut Department of Transportation was also alerted as the investigation shut down a stretch of the highway, the station's report noted.
Exactly where along I-91 the crash happened is not entirely clear from available reporting. WTNH reported that the highway was closed between Exits 36 and 35B until approximately 10 p.m., while NBC Connecticut's report of a state police response near Exit 38 and closure of the Exit 38A off-ramp concerned a separate July 2025 crash. One account placed the crash scene as still active around 9:15 p.m.
Heavy Traffic Piled Up as Lanes Stayed Shut
Heavy traffic built up in the area as the closure dragged on. The crash remained under investigation as of Thursday night, and no additional details on the cause had been released.
This is not the first major multi-vehicle crash to snarl I-91 through Windsor this year. In July, a five-vehicle crash on I-91 North near Exit 37 sent four people to the hospital just before 6:50 a.m. as drivers slowed for traffic, according to the Hartford Courant. In that case, state police determined the driver of a 2017 Honda Civic was at fault and issued her a misdemeanor summons, and the newspaper reported that the injuries involved were minor.
