A man was rushed to the hospital Friday morning after being shot while driving in the westbound lanes of Interstate 635 near the Dallas North Tollway, in what police describe as an apparent road rage incident. No arrests have been made, and the suspect remains at large as investigators work to piece together what happened.
Dallas police officers responded at about 9:05 a.m. to the reported shooting in the westbound lanes of I-635 near the DNT, according to CBS News Texas. Investigators found that the man was allegedly shot by a suspect in another vehicle while driving on the highway, the outlet reported. Dallas Fire-Rescue transported the victim, whose name was not released, to a hospital. WFAA reported that the victim was awake, alert, communicating with medics, and stable during transport.
As of the time of the report, no arrests had been made and no suspect description had been released, per the same account. WFAA similarly reported that the shooting happened during an apparent road rage incident, with the suspect having fled in an unknown vehicle and police still searching for leads. The investigation remained ongoing, according to the same reporting.
A Pattern of Violence on North Texas Freeways
Friday's shooting adds to a string of road rage incidents that have rattled drivers across North Texas in recent months. Dallas police previously asked for the public’s help identifying and locating a suspect who opened fire on a driver near Interstate 635/LBJ Freeway in a separate case, according to CBS News Texas. In that incident, which happened around 10:30 a.m. on May 24, police said a person in a newer model black Chevrolet Tahoe followed another driver as they exited the freeway, pulled alongside and opened fire, hitting the victim several times.
Police described that suspect as an unknown Black male approximately 30 years old with an afro hairstyle and a bright orange colored beard, driving a Tahoe with a lift kit, black wheels, dark tint and a roof rack, per the same CBS News Texas report. The incident underscores how difficult these freeway shootings can be to crack without witnesses or clear suspect vehicle descriptions.
Other North Texas Cases Show Range of Outcomes
Not every road rage case in the region has gone unsolved. Duncanville police arrested 42-year-old Kevin Gray for allegedly shooting at another driver during a road rage incident near Cockrell Hill Road and Highway 67, according to FOX 4 News. The victim said a Tesla driver fired shots while the vehicles were stopped at an intersection, but thankfully, no one was hit, the station reported. Investigators used license plate reader cameras to identify the Tesla driver as Gray, of Garland, who was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Another I-635 road rage attack left three victims hospitalized and suspect Angel Zamora Moreno behind bars, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. That case allegedly involved Moreno ramming other vehicles and driving into a TxDOT employee during a violent rampage on the freeway, the station reported. Zamora Moreno remains in Dallas County Jail on bonds totaling more than $900,000, according to jail records cited in that report.
Friday's shooting on I-635 near the Dallas North Tollway remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Dallas police as the search for the suspect continues.
