Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old Director of Engineering at The New York Times, was shot multiple times in broad daylight in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds complex on September 26, 2026, while children played on nearby athletic fields. Alameda County prosecutors have charged his wife's parents, 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, with special-circumstance murder, alleging they ambushed him in a killing authorities say was planned well in advance.
Charges Carry Maximum Penalty Under State Law
According to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, Zhang and Chen were charged on September 30 with murder, a firearm allegation, and lying in wait — a special circumstance under California Penal Code 190.2 that carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole or the death penalty upon conviction. Per Shouse Law Group, that special circumstance requires proof the defendants concealed their purpose and waited for an opportunity to launch a surprise attack; California is not carrying out executions. Surveillance video recovered by investigators and detailed in court filings shows Zhang and Chen working in tandem to shoot McKinsey repeatedly behind an SUV in the parking lot before fleeing in a black Honda Civic, according to SFGATE.
Police detained Zhang and Chen minutes after the shooting as they drove away in the park parking lot, recovering one firearm in Chen's possession and a second gun in the car that Zhang admitted using, per WNEP. A Dublin Police Services sergeant driving nearby saw McKinsey at the 6700 Dublin Boulevard complex around 3:08 p.m. that day as witnesses began calling 911.
Police Entered Estranged Wife's Home
On September 29, Dublin Police entered the Dublin home of McKinsey's estranged wife, Candice Jang. No property was seized. Jang has not been charged with any crime.
McKinsey and Jang married in Texas in 2011 and filed for divorce in December 2025 after both parties sought domestic violence restraining orders, according to the Guardian. The fatal shooting occurred days before a scheduled hearing in their custody dispute over three children, and both spouses had filed cross-restraining orders alleging domestic abuse; McKinsey's petition also alleged anti-LGBTQ slurs and abuse related to his transition. In October 2025, McKinsey was charged in Alameda County with a misdemeanor child-abuse charge related to allegations involving their 6-year-old, and a separate charge of endangering their 2-year-old daughter, according to Daily Voice. McKinsey pleaded not guilty to those charges.
A Decade-Old Pregnancy Tragedy Resurfaces in Court Records
Long before the shooting, McKinsey's family history included a pregnancy loss.
McKinsey alleged that Jang made him move heavy boxes during a move, after which he began bleeding. He gave birth to a son, Romeo Preston McKinsey, who died within an hour of birth. McKinsey alleged that the heavy lifting triggered premature labor and caused his son's death.
Executive Career Spanned Splunk, UKG and The Times
McKinsey joined The New York Times in January 2023 as Director of Engineering for NYT Games, leading 22 software engineers and three managers on major digital products including Connections, per Daily Voice. Before joining the Times, he held engineering leadership roles at Splunk and UKG. He earned computer science degrees from Georgia Tech and UC Berkeley, according to SFGATE.
Prosecutors have charged Zhang and Chen, McKinsey's in-laws, with special-circumstance murder for allegedly ambushing him in tandem, but key questions remain about the full scope of any conspiracy and whether additional individuals knew of or facilitated the attack. As coverage of the case continues, officials have been careful to separate the confirmed criminal charges against Zhang and Chen from the unproven allegations McKinsey and Jang exchanged in civil family court filings over the years.
