A Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol pursuit of a suspect wanted for reckless DUI driving ended in dramatic fashion Tuesday morning in East Los Angeles, with deputies using PIT maneuvers, spike strips and a box-in attempt before the driver was finally hauled out of his vehicle. The chase crossed two freeways and spilled onto surface streets before authorities managed to bring it to a stop.
The pursuit began on the westbound 10 Freeway before the suspect's vehicle hopped onto the northbound 5 Freeway into the downtown area, cutting across lanes and hitting estimated speeds of up to 80 mph, according to KTLA. From there, the driver moved off the freeway system entirely and onto surface streets, where the standoff with law enforcement would eventually play out.
The California Highway Patrol took over control of the pursuit at North Eastern Avenue and Fisher Street in East Los Angeles, as reported by FOX 11 Los Angeles. It was there that officers escalated their tactics, attempting multiple PIT maneuvers along with spike strips and a box-in attempt to force the vehicle to a stop.
Items Flew From the Car as Driver Reversed
During the chase, the suspect sideswiped another vehicle, though it remains unclear whether anyone in that car or any officers involved in the pursuit were injured, per the same FOX 11 account. At one point, items were seen spilling out of the suspect's vehicle, and the driver even put the car in reverse before it finally came to a stop.
Once stopped, the suspect refused to exit the vehicle, prompting deputies and CHP officers to surround it with guns drawn. The two outlets covering the arrest differ slightly on timing: KTLA reported the suspect was taken into custody at approximately 11:10 a.m., while the FOX 11 report put the arrest at around 11:15 a.m., following a brief struggle in which officers pulled the driver from the vehicle.
Identity and Motive Still Unknown
Authorities have not released the driver's identity or detailed the formal criminal charges pending against him, the article notes. Law enforcement has also not disclosed what initial observations or driving behavior prompted the original DUI stop attempt, leaving the circumstances that triggered the entire pursuit unresolved for now.
Tuesday's chase follows a familiar pattern for the region. A June 2026 pursuit that also ended in East Los Angeles concluded with a brief standoff before the suspect exited the vehicle, and in that case too, KTLA reported that no details were immediately available about what had prompted the police pursuit or what the suspect was wanted for.
Other recent Los Angeles-area chases have followed a similar arc of suspects abandoning freeways for city streets and endangering other drivers along the way. In August 2025, a pursuit reported by NBC Los Angeles saw a driver reach speeds of over 90 mph before getting off the 10 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley and surrendering, following what the outlet described as close calls with other vehicles. That chase ended with an arrest in Monrovia. A separate pursuit covered by FOX 11 described a suspect running red lights and nearly hitting a pedestrian before abandoning a vehicle under a freeway interchange and attempting to flee on foot.
