East Palo Alto police detained five people and recovered multiple short-barreled AR-style pistols, firearm magazines and a large quantity of ammunition after responding to a report of a man with a firearm last Wednesday. Several suspects were ultimately arrested following a consent search of a residence tied to the investigation.
According to the East Palo Alto Police Department, officers responded on October 7 to the report of an armed man. A witness on scene identified the suspects, which led officers to detain five individuals as the investigation developed.
With the consent of the residence's owner, officers then searched the home, the department said in its Facebook post. That search turned up the short-barreled AR-style pistols along with magazines and ammunition, though the department's post did not specify exact quantities or calibers recovered.
Several Arrests Follow the Search
Several suspects were arrested after the search was completed, per the same police account. The department has not released the names, ages or specific charges tied to the arrests, and it remains unclear whether all five people initially detained were among those ultimately taken into custody.
In its post, the department reiterated its broader mission, saying it remains committed to protecting the community and keeping neighborhoods safe. No additional detail was provided about the residence's location or the identity of the witness who flagged the suspects to officers.
Not the First Weapons Bust in the Area
This is not the first time East Palo Alto has seen a case involving a stockpile of illegal weapons. In 2013, police arrested two men in connection with a gun arsenal, according to Palo Alto Online. That investigation, which involved East Palo Alto's Special Duty Unit, Menlo Park police narcotics officers and state parole agents, led to the recovery of seven rifles, 10 handguns and 5,000 rounds of ammunition from a Redwood City storage locker.
Illegal firearm recoveries have also drawn federal attention in the South Bay. In a 2021 enforcement operation, the ATF seized approximately 50 firearms and more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Northern District of California. In a separate federal case, Mark Dehart pleaded guilty to possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle and to being a felon in possession of ammunition, per a statement from the same federal prosecutor's office.
The October 7 case remains under investigation, and East Palo Alto police have not released further details on charges, booking information or the broader scope of the search.
