Eight people were taken to hospitals in the Napa County area Saturday evening after an apparent head-on collision between two vehicles on Highway 29 north of St. Helena. The crash drew a multi-agency emergency response, with CAL FIRE, Napa County firefighters, the St. Helena Fire Department and American Medical Response all converging on the scene around 6 p.m.
The two vehicles involved included a Grand Wagoneer sport utility vehicle, which ended up with a crushed front end after crashing with a black vehicle, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
A Stretch of Highway With a History
Saturday's crash adds to a string of serious incidents along this particular stretch of Highway 29 over the years. In November 2019, two people died in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 29 just north of St. Helena, according to the California Highway Patrol, as reported by SFGATE. The same corridor saw a fatal crash near Yountville in May 2021 that killed a 24-year-old St. Helena man and injured four others, per CHP information cited by the Napa Valley Register.
More recently, a two-vehicle collision north of St. Helena in February 2023 left both drivers hospitalized, with one reported to have major injuries, the Napa Valley Register noted in a separate report. And as recently as January, Highway 29 was shut down after a crash near Yountville before reopening shortly before 11 a.m., according to the CHP log referenced in the same publication.
A Known Congestion Point
Transportation planners have flagged this general area before. A Napa County baseline transportation report notes that SR 29 is congested between Yountville and St. Helena, even as the broader roadway system generally operates within its capacity, according to Napa County. The same document references collision data compiled by the California Highway Patrol's SWITRS system, which tracked reported crashes countywide in the early 2000s.
A more recent road safety risk study from the Napa Valley Transportation Authority also references the St. Helena Highway and Pratt Avenue area, though the available excerpt does not spell out the study's specific findings for that location. It remains unclear what role, if any, road design or congestion played in Saturday's crash, and no detailed CHP incident report was available at the time of this report.
