A 25-year-old man wanted in El Paso on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon has been captured hundreds of miles away in Albuquerque, New Mexico, closing out a cross-state fugitive search. George Gilbert Marez was taken into custody near the intersection of Wyoming Boulevard NE and Candelaria Road on Thursday, and he is now being held while he awaits a trip back to Texas.
Marez was wanted out of El Paso for offenses of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to KVIA. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that he was ultimately located and arrested in New Mexico, ending what had become a multi-agency pursuit stretching from El Paso into Albuquerque.
How Investigators Closed In On Marez
The case moved across jurisdictions when the El Paso Lone Star Fugitive Task Force asked for backup from counterparts in New Mexico. Per Telemundo 48 El Paso, that task force requested assistance from the Southwest Investigative Fugitive Task Force specifically to locate and arrest Marez once leads pointed to New Mexico.
That collaboration paid off on October 29, when the Southwest Investigative Fugitive Taskforce found and apprehended Marez near the Wyoming Boulevard and Candelaria Road intersection in Albuquerque. The station's report notes the arrest brought an end to the search that had spanned two states.
Booked and Awaiting Extradition
Jail records show Marez was booked into the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center following his arrest. The same records indicate he now awaits extradition back to Texas, where the aggravated assault case against him originated.
No additional details about the alleged assault or any victim involved have been released, and it remains unclear when extradition proceedings will move forward or when Marez might return to El Paso to face the charges.
