A 57-year-old man held in El Paso County Sheriff's Office custody has died at a local hospital, officials confirmed, after he was hospitalized for medical treatment less than a week earlier. The man had been in custody since November 16, 2025, and was transported to the hospital on October 20 for medical concerns before he was pronounced dead there early Monday morning.
Hospitalization Came Days Before Death
According to KVIA, the Sheriff's Office reported that the man was taken to the hospital for treatment on October 20, 2026, and remained there until his death. The outlet reported he died at the hospital at approximately 4:23 a.m. on Monday, October 26, while KTSM reported the time as about 4:30 a.m. the same morning. Officials have said the circumstances surrounding the death appear to be medical in nature, though the article notes the official cause of death has not yet been determined.
As CBS4/KFOX14 reported, the Sheriff's Office confirmed the 57-year-old inmate died while receiving medical care at the hospital. The cause of death remains under investigation, per the same account, even as authorities describe the circumstances as appearing medical rather than suspicious.
Multiple Agencies Now Involved
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has been notified of the death, the station's report states. The Texas Rangers and the Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit are both investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
Because the man died at a hospital rather than inside the jail itself, the investigation may fall outside the scope of a state rule requiring independent law-enforcement review of in-custody deaths. A February 2026 opinion from the Texas attorney general, hosted on the Texas Commission on Jail Standards website, concluded that the state's Government Code requires an independent investigation when a prisoner dies inside a county jail, but not when the death occurs outside the jail, such as in a hospital. The opinion also found that the Commission has statutory authority to adopt rules requiring independent investigations of prisoner deaths in custody beyond the baseline established by the statute.
Fifth Death of the Year, Down From Last Year's Pace
This marks the fifth in-custody death reported by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in 2026, compared with nine reported during the same period in 2025. An inmate death at the Downtown jail in early August was described as the fourth in-custody death of the year, according to a report from the El Paso Times. The county's 2025 annual report had separately noted that the Downtown Detention Facility recorded eight in-custody deaths that year.
No further details about the man's identity, the case that brought him into custody, or the specific medical circumstances of his death have been released. Investigators have not indicated when the inquiry by the Texas Rangers or the Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit might conclude.
