A car crashed into the entrance of a Price Chopper grocery store in Overland Park on Thursday, sending a building inspector to the scene while shoppers paused their grocery runs to take in the damage. Police say nobody inside the vehicle was hurt.
The crash happened at the Price Chopper located at 8686 Antioch Road, between West 87th Street and Santa Fe Drive, according to FOX4KC. Overland Park police said officers were called to the scene at about noon, and when they arrived, they found a Mercury Grand Marquis had crashed directly into the building's entryway.
Two elderly people were driving the Mercury Grand Marquis, and police confirmed it was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Per the station's report citing the Overland Park Police Department, nobody was injured in the incident, a relatively fortunate outcome given a car had just punched into the front of a busy grocery store.
Building Inspector Called to Check the Damage
With the entrance compromised, a building inspector was called to assess the damage to the Price Chopper, the same report notes. No further details on the extent of the structural damage were available.
This is not the first time a vehicle has plowed into a building in Overland Park. In March 2025, a driver crashed into an apartment building elsewhere in the city and was taken to a hospital afterward, according to a separate FOX4KC report. That earlier crash resulted in injury, a contrast to Thursday's incident at the grocery store.
A Store With a History of Renovation Plans
The Antioch Road location has been on Price Chopper's radar for upgrades before. Back in 2020, the Johnson County Post reported the store was slated for remodel work as part of a chain-wide push that included more than $54 million in capital investments across Price Chopper's stores that year. Those plans reportedly centered on expanding the store's fresh departments, including produce, food service, bakery, deli and meat.
It is not established whether those 2020 remodeling plans were ever completed or whether they have any bearing on Thursday's crash. For now, the cause of the collision, along with the extent of the damage to the storefront, has not been detailed publicly.
How To Request a Crash Report
