A smashburger spot is heading to Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and it comes from a Dorchester chef who once talked his way into a restaurant lease without ever having run one. Smashed by BRED, the new fast-casual concept from BRED Gourmet founder Tambo Barrow, is planned for a 400-square-foot space inside the Quincy Market Main Hall at 4 South Market Street, with crispy-edged smash burgers, chicken, fries, and dirty sodas expected on the menu.

According to nbcboston.com, the shop is planning to open at the marketplace in November, though the dossier notes an earlier marketplace announcement had pointed to a spring or summer 2026 debut, and a report from Boston Restaurant Talk later cited November instead. An official menu and opening date have not yet been announced, according to What Now Boston, which reported that the new spot is slated for the Quincy Market Main Hall.

Barrow, a 39-year-old Mattapan native, already runs a trio of BRED restaurants known for smoky burgers and comfort food, according to The Boston Globe. He started his first location in Dorchester’s Lower Mills in 2015 after leaving the insurance industry, the Globe reports. Barrow was also a college basketball player, per the same account.

BRED’s Early Days

The restaurant’s opening night was disastrous, according to the Globe.

BRED serves burgers and comfort food, the Globe notes. BRED's own account of its story describes a kitchen fueled by maple and hickory smoke, with a menu that also includes cocktails, according to bredgourmet.com. The brand says its food was first built on Caribbean flavors before evolving through years of travel and culinary inspiration, per the same source.

The smoked-burger approach that defines BRED reportedly traces back to a smoker left behind at the Dorchester location, which Barrow said sped up ticket times and improved flavor, according to Cambridge Day. That smoked-burger concept won Boston Magazine's award for best burger in Boston in 2021, the outlet reports. BRED's Kendall Square location opened October 11, 2024, according to Cambridge Day. The restaurant occupies 3,900 square feet and offers a full bar with cocktails, brunch, and catering and event-hosting options — unlike the Lower Mills original.

Thicker Smoked Burgers Meet a New Smash Format

The existing BRED locations serve thicker, smoked burgers, with Kendall Square operating as a full-service restaurant, bar and lounge while Lower Mills remains counter service with some seating, according to nbcboston.com. Current offerings include a classic Smashburger topped with grilled onions, American cheese, tomato jam, and BRED aioli, as well as the UFO, a bunless double smashburger, per What Now Boston. Beyond burgers, the brand serves smoked wings, honey butter cornbread, oxtail nachos, and a beer-battered onion ring tower, the outlet reports — a menu Patch describes as Caribbean- and Creole-inspired American comfort food, including maplewood-smoked burgers topped with fried plantains and smoked pork belly.

Barrow chose Faneuil Hall partly for its foot traffic after being approached about the location through a third party, according to the Globe.

Barrow also reflected on how social media has changed since BRED opened, according to the Globe.

Faneuil Hall's broader dining lineup has been shifting this fall. The Moseley, a fine-dining restaurant at South Station Tower, recently opened on the ninth floor, while Celine, a Montreal-inspired restaurant from the CODA Restaurant Group, opened in Fort Point in the former Blue Dragon space, according to Axios Boston. The outlet also reported that Mochiko Hawaiian closed its Newtonville and Boston Landing locations, with the Boston Landing store later reopening.
