A two-car crash on Mokapu Boulevard sent five people to the hospital, with two of them listed in critical condition, in an evening collision in the Kailua-bound direction. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services treated patients ranging in age from 35 to 88, and paramedics gave advanced life support to everyone involved before rushing them to area emergency rooms.
According to Hawaii News Now, the crash happened Saturday evening around 6:30 p.m., with Honolulu EMS reporting the collision occurred in the Kailua-bound direction of Mokapu Boulevard. An 88-year-old man and a 35-year-old man were both transported to the hospital in critical condition, the outlet reported. A separate account from KHON2 places the crash on Sunday evening and identifies the second critically injured patient as a 25-year-old man rather than someone age 35 — a discrepancy that remains unresolved between the two reports.
Beyond the age and timing discrepancies, the two outlets' accounts of the injured are largely consistent. KHON2 reported that EMS responded to five patients total: a 62-year-old woman, a 57-year-old woman, a 68-year-old man, an 88-year-old man, and either a 25-year-old or 35-year-old man, depending on the source. The station's report notes that the three patients not listed as critical — the 62-year-old woman, the 57-year-old woman, and the 68-year-old man — were all treated for serious injuries.
Few Details Released So Far
Paramedics transported all five patients to an emergency room for further treatment after providing advanced life support at the scene. Beyond that, specifics about what triggered the crash remain limited. Per the same KHON2 account, details of what caused the crash are still sparse, and no information about citations, an official police report, or an ongoing investigation has been verified.
A Road With a Troubled History
Mokapu Boulevard has drawn complaints from nearby residents well before this latest crash. Kailua homeowner Susan Wadas told KITV that she has lived on the road for 14 years and has lost count of the crashes she has witnessed outside her home. Wadas said that in the last five years alone, she has had to replace or repair her own cars eight times because of collisions on the street.
One of those incidents, KITV reported, involved an alleged drunk driver who struck Wadas' car along with vehicles belonging to her son and her son's girlfriend during a Friday evening crash on the boulevard. In response to the pattern of wrecks, state Senator Chris Lee told the station he was working on legislation that would raise penalties for speeding in school zones and add speed cameras at intersections by July, though it is not established whether those measures have since been introduced, passed, or put into effect.
Deadly Collision Nearby in 2023
The corridor has also seen fatal consequences in years past. In 2023, a 50-year-old cyclist died after colliding with a truck near the intersection of Mokapu Saddle Road and Kapaa Quarry Road, according to KITV. Police said the cyclist was riding northbound on Mokapu Saddle Road when he struck the rear of the truck as it turned onto Kapaa Quarry Road; the truck driver was not injured. Investigators shut down Kapaa Quarry Road between Mokapu and Kalani Highway while they worked the scene.
