Four people were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after a violent three-vehicle crash shut down part of Dixie Highway in Kenton County, with one car left wrapped around a roadside pole. The crash happened just after 5 p.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes near Winding Way, triggering a closure that stretched into the night.
Emergency responders arriving at the scene found three vehicles involved in the wreck, according to local12.com. The occupants of two of the vehicles were uninjured, but four people riding in the third car were taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center with serious injuries, the station reported, citing Lakeside Park/Crestview Hills police.
The crash occurred along Dixie Highway, also known as U.S. 25, between the Interstate 275 eastbound off-ramp and Winding Way, according to FOX19. At least one vehicle was severely damaged after being wrapped around a pole, WLWT reported.
Hours-Long Shutdown Snarled Traffic
All southbound lanes of Dixie Highway were blocked between the I-275 eastbound off-ramp and Winding Way, a stretch of about 0.13 miles, per the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet data cited by WCPO. Police on scene initially told the outlet they expected the road to stay blocked for four to six hours while the investigation unfolded. The roadway remained closed for about three hours and 51 minutes as authorities worked to clear the scene and document the crash.
The wreck was finally cleared around 11:35 p.m. Thursday, according to Eagle Country 99.3. Northbound lanes had already reopened to traffic following the crash, per the same FOX19 report.
Morning Repairs Expected To Slow Traffic Again
Even with the road cleared overnight, drivers were warned not to expect a full return to normal Friday morning. Crews are scheduled to repair utility poles and traffic cabinets damaged in the crash at the intersection of Dixie Highway and Winding Way, FOX19 reported. The right two southbound lanes were expected to be blocked at the intersection while that repair work takes place.
The Kenton County Police Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting Lakeside Park/Crestview Hills police with the investigation, according to WLWT. No cause for the crash had been released as of the latest reporting.
