Temazcal Tequila Cantina has permanently closed its Framingham restaurant after eight years on Route 9, marking the second location the Mexican restaurant chain has lost in less than a year. Temazcal also has locations in Lynnfield, Burlington and Dedham.
The cantina, known for elevated Mexican cuisine alongside an extensive lineup of tequilas and spirits, occupied 161 Worcester Road. That 7,200-square-foot retail building at 161 Worcester Road, fully occupied by Temazcal, was acquired in January 2020 by Campanelli in a joint venture with TriGate Capital, along with 492 Old Connecticut Path, according to the Boston Real Estate Times. Before Temazcal moved in, the Route 9 site had been home to a location of the Italian chain Papa Razzi, the station's report on the property's history notes.
A Pattern of Contraction for the Tequila-Focused Chain
This is not Temazcal's first retreat this year. The chain's original 2011 flagship at 250 Northern Ave. in Boston's Seaport District closed on January 31 after landlord Lincoln Property Company declined to renew its lease, a shutdown Hoodline previously reported alongside the simultaneous closure of sister restaurant Tony C's. More than 80 employees were laid off when the two Seaport restaurants closed in January.
With Framingham now gone too, Temazcal has locations in Lynnfield, Burlington and Dedham. While the Seaport closure was tied directly to the landlord's decision not to renew the lease, the exact business rationale behind shuttering the Framingham location has not been announced.
From Suburban Expansion to a Shrinking Map
Temazcal has locations in Lynnfield, Burlington and Dedham.
The brand offered tequila and mezcal alongside Mexican dishes. The Framingham location first opened in 2018.
Parent Company Still Active Elsewhere in Boston
Temazcal's ownership group is Rebel Restaurants, which also runs Tony C's Sports Bar & Grill and Jack's Coal Fired Pizza. The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority describes The Lawn on D as green space next to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center; in 2020, Rebel Restaurants was tapped to curate a menu for an outdoor restaurant there.
