Fresno was hazy and in the low 70s, with the afternoon high still forecast near 95 before a much cooler weekend settles in. The temperature drop will be the real story: Saturday tops out near 84, and Sunday is forecast to reach 79 to 80, with a chance of rain. The National Weather Service’s Fresno forecast lists current conditions and the weekend outlook.
Fresno residents should limit strenuous afternoon activity, drink plenty of fluids and make sure children, older adults and pets have access to a cool place.
Friday’s forecast high is notably warmer than the seasonal norm: Fresno’s normal high for Oct. 9 is 82 degrees, according to the National Weather Service’s climate records. The normal high then gradually falls through the month, reaching 78 degrees by Oct. 17. That puts the forecast 95-degree peak well above typical early-October conditions, even as cooler weather is expected to follow. NWS climate normals show the daily October averages.
The Heat Advisory for the Fresno area had expired by Friday, though lingering heat still warranted precautions, especially for people working or exercising outdoors. The NWS discussion notes that the advisory had expired.
Friday Heat Gives Way To A Cooler Saturday
Friday will be hot. Friday night should be mostly clear, with temperatures dropping to around 62 degrees.
Saturday brings a noticeable break from the heat, with increasing clouds and a high near 84. Winds should remain light, making it a much easier day for errands, outdoor work and weekend plans than Friday. The National Weather Service forecasts increasing clouds and a high of 84.
Small Rain Chance Arrives Sunday
Rain is possible in Fresno Sunday as temperatures cool. The National Weather Service’s Fresno forecast includes a chance of rain.
A slight chance of light showers may continue into Monday, though the National Weather Service puts the chance at 15% to 20% for valley and Sierra foothill locations. Higher elevations in the Sierra could see more meaningful precipitation: snow levels are forecast near 8,000 feet Sunday night and 7,000 feet Monday night, with a 50% to 65% chance of at least 2 inches of snow over 72 hours above 9,000 feet. The Hanford office’s forecast discussion outlines the shower chances and Sierra snow outlook.
A Mild, Mostly Dry Stretch Follows
Showers are possible Monday, followed by a broader cooldown. Temperatures are expected to moderate Wednesday and rise closer to seasonal averages by Thursday.
For Fresno, the pattern shifts quickly from late-season heat to crisp fall mornings in just a few days. Friday is the day to take the heat seriously; after that, a light jacket may get more use than the sunscreen.
