A warm, foggy start is expected in Minneapolis Wednesday, with temperatures rising from the 50s toward 68 degrees. The main concern later in the day is a chance of showers and thunderstorms that could affect the afternoon and evening commute.
What To Know About Wednesday’s Storm Risk
Patchy fog is possible early Wednesday. Mostly cloudy skies and rising temperatures are expected, with showers possible in the early afternoon and showers or thunderstorms possible into the evening.
Some storms could bring small hail and gusty winds. An isolated tornado is also a conditional possibility in parts of eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin; that threat depends on how much the atmosphere heats up. Residents should monitor changing conditions through the afternoon and evening.
Past October Tornadoes And Storm Preparedness
According to the National Weather Service Aberdeen, October 9 and October 13, 2021, brought several tornadoes across eastern South Dakota and west-central Minnesota. Those were past events in a different area, not a prediction for Wednesday’s Twin Cities storms. For residents in a severe-weather watch area, the National Weather Service Twin Cities says conditions are favorable for dangerous weather and advises making plans to seek shelter if necessary. The agency also notes that counties and cities—not the NWS—decide when to activate warning sirens.
Cooler And Sunny Thursday
Showers and thunderstorms should move out before midnight, followed by patchy fog overnight and a cooler Thursday. Thursday will turn sunny after morning fog, with a high near 61 and northwest winds of 5 to 10 knots.
Friday stays mild and partly sunny, with a high near 60 degrees, while Halloween weekend looks warmer but less settled. Saturday brings possible rain showers with a high near 63, followed by a mostly cloudy Sunday near 63 and a better chance of rain returning Monday and Tuesday.
How Wednesday’s Forecast Has Evolved
An earlier outlook also called for warmth and thunderstorms. Hoodline's earlier forecast provides that comparison; the current outlook also describes possible small hail, gusty winds and a conditional isolated tornado threat.
