Kansas City was expected to wake to temperatures in the lower 40s Friday morning, with skies possibly clear at first and stratus potentially moving through, and a sharp north wind making the October air feel colder than the thermometer suggested. The city is headed for a breezy high near 52, but the bigger weather story arrives overnight: a possible freeze before a sunny weekend warmup.
Gusty Friday Winds Set The Tone
Northwesterly to northerly winds will run around 20 mph through the afternoon, with gusts reaching 25 to 35 mph. Stratus could return Friday morning before lifting and clearing later, and shower activity should end Thursday evening, so the main nuisance for commuters, cyclists and anyone with outdoor plans is the cold wind rather than wet weather.
Freeze Watch Covers Saturday Morning
A Freeze Watch is in effect from late Friday night through Saturday morning for portions of northeast Kansas and northern and northwestern Missouri. Near-to-below-freezing temperatures are possible over northern areas, and a first freeze is possible in northwestern and northern portions of the forecast area. The National Weather Service says the cold could damage sensitive outdoor plants, so gardeners in affected areas should cover tender vegetation before bedtime Friday.
Saturday should recover to near 58 degrees under sunny skies after the early-morning freeze risk, then Sunday warms to about 66. The rebound continues next week, with highs near 70 Monday, mostly sunny and pleasant conditions Tuesday, 79 Wednesday and 80 Thursday, while precipitation chances remain minimal through at least midweek.
