Fulton County Schools has opened a review of attendance zones for Camp Creek, Renaissance and Sandtown middle schools, tying the process to a rebuilt Camp Creek campus set to open in August 2027. The district held its first community meeting this week at Langston Hughes High School in South Fulton, where the three middle schools' students eventually feed in, giving parents an opportunity to provide input before any boundary lines were drawn.
According to Fulton County School System, the so-called Region A process focuses on middle school attendance zones and supports planning for the replacement Camp Creek Middle School, which is scheduled to open in August 2027. The district says the review is intended to balance enrollment among neighboring middle schools and make effective use of available space throughout the region. The new Camp Creek building is being designed for 1,200 students in grades 6 through 8, according to the district's capital plan page.
What Happened at the First Meeting
The district held its first community meeting Wednesday night at Langston Hughes High School in South Fulton, as reported by WSB-TV. That session, labeled Redistricting 101 and Feedback on the district's published timeline, marked the start of a public input process that Fulton schools says will continue for months before any decision is made. Per 95.5 WSB, the session gave parents an opportunity to weigh in on the proposed changes as district planners explained why attendance boundaries may need to shift to balance enrollment among nearby schools.
Two more public sessions are already on the calendar. The district has scheduled an initial draft attendance-zone map presentation and feedback session for November 12, followed by a revised draft map session on December 9, per the redistricting timeline posted by Fulton County School System. Those sessions are described as feedback opportunities on draft maps, not a final vote.
Why the District Says Change Is Needed
Fulton officials say the goal is to prevent overcrowding and make sure each school has a balanced number of students, according to Atlanta News First. The station reports that the rebuilt Camp Creek Middle School is expected to open with a little bit of extra capacity, which is part of what's driving the broader look at how students from Camp Creek, Sandtown and Renaissance are currently distributed. The station also notes that if redistricting does move forward, it would not take place until fall 2027.
District planners are weighing options that include shifting some students from Sandtown and Renaissance middle schools and redrawing boundaries to better balance enrollment among the three schools, according to 95.5 WSB. The outlet also reports that Fulton County School District leaders are considering a rezoning plan that could impact hundreds of middle school students, though the station notes a final recommendation isn't expected until later in the process.
No Decisions Have Been Approved Yet
Despite the early planning work, Fulton County Schools has been clear that nothing is final. The district told WSB-TV that no school closures or consolidations are currently being considered in Region A, and that no attendance-zone changes, consolidations or closures have been approved. The district's own redistricting materials likewise state that the planning documents circulated so far do not represent approval of any specific boundary change, school closure or consolidation.
A vote on any proposal would not happen until next year, the station reports, and any new attendance zones would take effect no earlier than the start of the 2027-2028 school year. For now, families zoned for Camp Creek, Renaissance and Sandtown middle schools are being encouraged to attend the upcoming draft-map sessions in November and December as the district continues gathering input before any boundary lines are redrawn.
