A man was left in critical condition Friday night after a shooting in Parkway Village, and police have detained another man as they piece together what happened. Memphis Police officers responded to the 2700 block of Getwell Road around 8:40 p.m., where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.
The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, according to the Memphis Police Department, as reported by FOX13 Memphis. Investigators detained one man in connection with the shooting, though it remains unclear whether that individual has been formally charged. Detention by police does not equate to charges or proof of guilt, and no further details on the suspect or the circumstances leading up to the gunfire have been released.
A Stretch of Getwell Road With a Troubled History
Friday's shooting adds to concerns about violence along Getwell Road. On December 30, 2023, a man died from gunshot wounds after gunfire broke out near a gas pump on the same block during what was reportedly an attempted vehicle theft, according to a report from LocalMemphis.com.
The corridor has also drawn police attention for reasons beyond shootings. In October 2025, officers arrested a suspect at 2757 Getwell Road after he allegedly rammed a marked squad car multiple times in a grocery store parking lot while carrying two loaded handguns, a case Hoodline detailed in its report on the arrest at Emilio's Grocery. That suspect was charged with aggravated assault on an officer and felonious weapon possession.
Parkway Village's Broader Pattern of Violence
The shooting is also the latest in a series of violent incidents across the broader Parkway Village neighborhood, which falls under the patrol area of the Memphis Police Department's Mt. Moriah Station precinct, per the department's own community postings. Earlier this month, Hoodline reported two people were injured in a separate overnight shooting near Winchester and Knight Road in the same neighborhood. In September, a 33-year-old Memphis man was accused of shooting his girlfriend as she shielded her son near Pendleton Street and Waverly Avenue, a separate case Hoodline covered.
Parkway Village has also seen deadly violence tied to street altercations. A September 2025 fight on Watson Street escalated into gunfire that left two men dead, leading to first-degree murder charges filed against a suspect earlier this year; investigators in that case cited cellphone video and prior burglary reports. In June 2024, a man was fatally stabbed in the neighborhood, with a suspect swiftly detained by police.
Citywide Crime Trends Offer Some Context
The violence on Getwell Road comes even as citywide crime statistics point to a broader decline. Data released in July by the University of Memphis Public Safety Institute and the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission showed violent crime in Memphis fell 31.5% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to the Memphis Flyer. Youth Villages' Memphis Allies initiative runs community violence intervention programs across high-crime areas of the city.
Local officials have credited the multi-agency Memphis Safe Task Force with boosting targeted law enforcement presence and curbing gun violence across Shelby County, according to Smart City Memphis. The task force began operating nearly a year before a July 24, 2026, Memphis Flyer article. Officials have pointed to that initiative as a contributing factor in the early 2026 crime drops, even as individual blocks like this stretch of Getwell Road continue to see repeated violent incidents.
