A gold Jeep Grand Cherokee was speeding south on Noland Road near East 51st Street South Friday morning when it swung into the opposing lane to pass another vehicle on a blind curve, slamming head-on into a northbound gray Jeep Renegade. The Renegade flipped and slid to rest against a guardrail on the west side of the road. Both drivers were rushed to area hospitals, with one in critical condition.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just before 8:55 a.m. Friday, according to the Kansas City Police Department, as reported by KCTV. Police said the preliminary investigation found the Grand Cherokee crossed the double yellow line while passing another vehicle on the left and continued south directly into the northbound lanes, according to fox4kc.com.

The impact sent the Renegade overturning before it came to rest against the guardrail, police said. The Grand Cherokee driver was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries and, as of 1:10 p.m. Friday, remained in critical but stable condition, per police. The Renegade driver was sent to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition as of the same time.

Investigation Continues as Few Details Emerge

Police have released no further information, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing, per the same account. Neither driver has been publicly identified, and it remains unclear whether any citations or charges will follow.

This is not the first time a head-on crash has closed part of Noland Road. In March, a northbound 2003 Chrysler Town and Country crossed the center line near South Noland Road and 35th Street and struck a southbound 2025 Ford Maverick, killing the minivan's driver and seriously injuring two occupants of the pickup, according to The Kansas City Star. That crash shut down the road for hours before it reopened around 9:30 p.m. A separate head-on collision in southeast Kansas City in 2021, involving a dark gray Chevrolet Cruze and a silver Kia Optima, left one driver dead and the other hospitalized in critical condition, the Star also reported.

Several Serious Head-On Wrecks Near Noland Road

The Missouri State Highway Patrol maintains a statewide Traffic Safety Compendium drawing on the Missouri Crash Analysis Reporting System, tracking crash circumstances, fatalities, injuries, and factors like speed and alcohol involvement across the state. Friday's crash marks at least the third serious head-on wreck reported on or near Noland Road in recent years.
