A 40-year-old Grain Valley man died Monday night after the 2005 Honda Accord he was driving failed to negotiate a curve, ran off South Buckner Tarsney Road, and slammed into a tree before catching fire. The crash happened just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of South Buckner Tarsney Road and East Colbern Road.
According to KSHB 41 Kansas City, the man was driving southbound when he lost control, ran off the right side of the roadway, and struck the tree. He was the vehicle's sole occupant and was wearing his seatbelt, the Missouri State Highway Patrol told the station. Official crash records reviewed by Hoodline show the Honda was totaled in the impact and later towed from the scene by Elite Towing, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The patrol's report states the driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:28 p.m. by Dr. Riley. Cpl. C.M. McDonald investigated, assisted by one corporal, one trooper, officers from the Grain Valley Police Department, and deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
A Deadly Stretch for Troop A
The crash marked the 47th fatal crash and 50th overall traffic death investigated in 2026 by MSHP Troop A, per the agency's records. It is the latest in a string of serious incidents along the South Buckner Tarsney Road corridor over the past year.
Just four days earlier, on October 8, a three-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate 70 near South Buckner Tarsney Road injured three drivers, who were all taken to Centerpoint Medical Center, the patrol's crash records show. That wreck involved vehicles from Grain Valley, Greenwood, and Sioux City, Iowa.
In December 2025, a Jackson County deputy helping direct traffic at a crash scene on South Buckner Tarsney Road at East Ryan Road was seriously injured when a vehicle drove into the active scene, according to patrol records.
A Recent Storefront Crash
In August 2026, a car crashed into the storefront of a Dollar General in Grain Valley after the driver's foot slipped onto the accelerator, temporarily closing the business, according to FOX4 News Kansas City. No severe injuries were reported in that crash.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate Monday's fatal crash.
