A 19-year-old Groton man is facing a reckless driving charge after Connecticut State Police say a sergeant clocked his BMW M3 going roughly 147 mph in a posted 65 mph zone on southbound I-395 in Putnam. The driver, identified as Orlando Perez, was stopped a few exits down near Danielson before being taken into custody.

According to Connecticut State Police, the incident happened at approximately 9:06 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, when a sergeant observed the BMW traveling southbound near Exit 46 in Putnam. Using a laser device, the sergeant measured the car's speed at roughly 147 mph, more than double the posted limit on that stretch of highway. That works out to about 82 mph over the limit, as Daily Voice noted in its report on the stop.

Stop Near Danielson

The sergeant caught up with the BMW M3 and initiated a stop in the area of Exit 43 in Danielson, per the same account. The driver was positively identified as Orlando Perez of Groton and taken into custody at the scene.

Perez was charged with reckless driving under Connecticut General Statute 14-222. He was released on a $1,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Danielson Superior Court on October 21.

I-395 has seen other high-speed stops in recent months. State Police reported a Guilford man was arrested for OUI and reckless driving following a traffic stop on I-395 in Montville back in August, and a separate case detailed by Daily Voice described a Massachusetts woman accused of driving as fast as 120 mph on the same highway before a Connecticut trooper pulled her over. Neither of those incidents has been shown to be connected to Perez's arrest.
