A gun went off inside the Kroger in Western Hills on Monday evening, sending everyone involved running in different directions before officers could arrive. No one was hurt, but Cincinnati police still have not identified a suspect in the unsettling scene that unfolded near the front of the grocery store.
Cincinnati police are investigating after the gun was discharged inside the Kroger in the 6000 block of Glenway Avenue, according to FOX19. Police said the shot went off near the front of the store, and everyone involved scattered the moment it happened. By the time officers reached the scene, everyone connected to the incident was already gone.
What Police Know So Far
What sparked the gunfire remains unclear. The station's report states plainly that it is not known what led to the shot being fired, and as of the report, no suspects had been identified. Police scanner traffic, however, offered a partial description: a possible suspect was described as a Black male, possibly a teenager, wearing a white shirt, and he may have been accompanied by a Black woman in her 30s wearing a red hoodie — described on scanner traffic as possibly his mother.
Those details come directly from radio traffic captured as officers responded, not from a confirmed police statement identifying anyone involved. No arrests, charges, or recovered weapon have been reported in connection with the incident.
Not the First Gunfire Near Glenway Avenue
This is not the first time gunfire has rattled a business along the same west-side corridor this year. In January, Green Township police determined that a firearm was negligently discharged inside a Chipotle restaurant on Glenway Avenue, according to Local 12. A woman inside that restaurant suffered a leg injury from fragments after the bullet struck the floor, though she was not directly shot, and officers later arrested the man they said was responsible after locating him in the Cheviot area.
Grocery stores elsewhere have seen similar scares in recent months. In Whitehall, police said a 28-year-old man was arraigned on a felonious assault charge after allegedly firing at a Kroger employee during an argument inside that store in August, as reported by ABC6. Nobody was hurt in that case either, and the man was held on a $1.5 million cash surety bond.
A Pattern Playing Out Nationally
Just a day before the Western Hills incident, a shot was fired inside an H-E-B grocery store in Uvalde, Texas, with police telling KSAT that no injuries were reported there either. Investigators in that case said one bullet was fired, stemming from a dispute between a father and his son who both worked at the store. The timing underscores how often gunfire inside everyday retail spaces has turned up in local headlines across the country recently, even when no one ends up hurt.
For now, the Western Hills case remains open, with no suspects identified and the cause of the gunfire still unexplained. Anyone with information has not been given a specific tip line in the available reporting, but Cincinnati police continue to investigate the incident at the Glenway Avenue store.
