Austin is waking up Friday, October 16, to cloudy skies, temperatures near 67 degrees and a strong north wind as a cold front pushes through Central Texas. A few showers or thunderstorms remain possible through midmorning, but the bigger story today is wind gusts that could reach 40 mph or higher. The afternoon should turn drier, though it will still feel more like fall than the recent run of summer-like heat.
Wind Advisory Covers Friday Commute
The National Weather Service has a Wind Advisory in effect from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with north winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts between 40 and 50 mph expected across South Central Texas. The National Weather Service warns that unsecured objects may be blown around, tree limbs could come down and high-profile vehicles may be harder to handle. Austin drivers should use extra caution, particularly on exposed roads and during the morning commute.
Showers Fade By Midmorning
Austin has about a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10 a.m. Skies should gradually break up later in the day, with a high near 70 and continued north winds of 15 to 20 mph. In other words, this looks more like a brief wet start than an all-day washout.
Cooler Friday Night, Sunny Saturday
Friday night will be mostly clear and much cooler, with a low around 50 and north winds still gusting as high as 40 mph. Saturday brings drier weather with filtered sunshine, with winds easing Saturday evening. Saturday night could be the chilliest part of the weekend, with temperatures dipping to about 48 degrees.
Austin’s Fall Flip Won’t Last Forever
The new Wind Advisory is the major update from Thursday’s forecast, which focused on one last blast of heat before the front arrived; Hoodline previously reported on that setup. Sunday stays dry and cool, followed by a steady warm-up beginning Monday. For now, though, Austin gets one very windy reminder that October can finally act like October.
