Seattle Fire sent a hazmat response to the 4700 block of West Marginal Way SW on Monday night after getting a report of a potentially hazardous chemical spill inside a commercial building. Firefighters evacuated everyone from the building as a precaution while crews worked to assess the situation.
The call came in Monday evening, according to a post from the Seattle Fire Dept..
The department said firefighters on scene were evacuating the building as a safety precaution. Separately,
West Seattle Blog
reported that the address cross-referenced to the Duwamish Longhouse.
Seattle police initially said West Marginal Way was closed in both directions as crews worked the scene, the outlet reported. Officials later said they planned to leave some lanes open so traffic could get through, though the final arrangement on the roadway was not detailed in the initial report.
What Remains Unknown
The specific chemical or substance involved has not been identified in reporting on the incident. It also remains unclear whether anyone was injured or exposed, what the commercial building is used for, or when the evacuation or street closures were lifted.
A Busy Stretch for Hazmat and Fire Crews
Monday's response adds to a string of hazardous-materials and fire calls along the West Marginal Way corridor this year. In June, a hazmat response at an address cross-referencing to the Delridge Arco/AM-PM turned out to be a CO2 leak, the same outlet reported, with the leak found and addressed before firefighters ventilated the building they had evacuated.
In August, crews responded to a fire at an industrial or commercial building in the 7200 block of West Marginal Way South, just east of West Seattle, with some streets blocked off. Initial crews at that scene reported multiple small fires around the building's perimeter, possibly electrical in origin, per the same outlet's coverage.
An Earlier West Marginal Way Hazmat Response
A separate incident on the corridor occurred on Sept. 13, 2016, when a container fire on a barge drew 100 firefighters and a hazmat response, Westside Seattle reported. That incident involved a barge fire, not the reported indoor spill in this case.
No incident report or confirmed case number for Monday's hazmat response was immediately available, and it was not clear when the scene was ultimately cleared. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
