A head-on collision between a Ford Mustang Mach-E and a Cadillac Escalade left two drivers with serious injuries on Royalton Road in Columbia Township. A 20-year-old man driving the Mustang eastbound and a 30-year-old woman driving the Escalade westbound were both hospitalized after the crash, and investigators say alcohol may have played a role.
According to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the head-on crash in the 2500 block of Royalton Road, also known as State Route 82. The young driver of the Mustang had to be extracted from his vehicle, and both he and the Escalade's driver sustained serious injuries, per the sheriff's office. Fox8.com, however, reported that the crash happened in the 25800 block of Royalton Road, reported at about 2:45 a.m. Friday — a discrepancy in the exact location that remains unresolved between the two accounts.
Fox8.com's initial report said there had been no word yet on what caused the crash or whether anyone was hurt. The sheriff's office release, by contrast, said both drivers wore their seatbelts and were listed in stable condition despite the serious injuries described.
Separate Hospitals, Separate Fire Crews
Emergency crews from two different departments responded to pull the drivers out and get them to care. Columbia Township Fire and Rescue transported the female driver of the Escalade to Southwest General Hospital, while Eaton Township Fire and Rescue took the male driver of the Mustang to St. John's Westshore Hospital in Westlake, according to the sheriff's office statement.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene following the crash, the release noted. The sheriff's office said alcohol may have contributed to the collision, though no further details on that possibility were included in the statement.
The crash comes amid a statewide toll from impaired driving: the Ohio State Highway Patrol counted 540 OVI-related fatal crashes in 2025, down from 581 in 2024. Fatalities in those crashes also fell, from 636 in 2024 to 593 in 2025, though the latest annual total still represents hundreds of deaths. The figures provide statewide context and do not indicate whether impairment has been established in the Royalton Road crash. The patrol’s annual fatal-crash summary tracks OVI-related crashes and fatalities.
Investigation Continues
Because the Mustang’s driver is 20, Ohio’s under-21 alcohol-driving rule is also relevant context: state law bars drivers under 21 from operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration of at least 0.02% but below 0.08%, with corresponding thresholds for breath and other tests. That provision is separate from the general OVI rule. The sheriff’s statement that alcohol may have contributed is not, by itself, a finding that either driver violated the law. Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.19 sets out both rules.
The Lorain County Sheriff's Office said it will continue investigating the crash, leaving open questions about its exact cause and the specific stretch of Royalton Road where it occurred. No additional updates on the drivers' conditions have been released beyond the reported stable status.
