Three people were hurt, two of them seriously, when a Ford Mustang and a Chevy Malibu slammed into each other head-on along Highway 1 north of Mosher Lane in Linn County Monday morning. The crash blocked both vehicles across the roadway and forced a temporary closure while crews worked to free the drivers trapped inside.

According to KWWL, 54-year-old Stephen Jewell of Dyersville was driving a 2026 Ford Mustang when it collided head-on with a 2010 Chevy Malibu driven by 37-year-old Colleen Arnold of Mt. Vernon, per the Linn County Sheriff's Office. Both cars ended up blocking the highway, and the impact was severe enough that Jewell and Arnold each had to be cut out of their vehicles. Both suffered serious injuries, the outlet reports.

A passenger riding in the Mustang, 63-year-old Holly Jewell of Dyersville, managed to escape the car on her own and suffered only minor injuries, according to the same report. KCRG similarly reported that the Mustang passenger was able to get out of the car under her own power with minor injuries, while the drivers of both vehicles had to be extricated. All three people were transported to University of Iowa Health Care, as detailed by KCRG, after the crash near Highway 1 and Mosher Lane.

Sheriff's Office Logged the Call Just After 8 A.M.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office says it was notified of the crash at 8:19 a.m., according to KCRG. The highway was closed for a short time while crews responded, and the road has since reopened, per KWWL. CBS2 Iowa likewise reported that Highway 1 was closed during the initial investigation.

A sizable multi-agency response converged on the scene, including Linn County Sheriff's Rescue, the Lisbon-Mt. Vernon Police Department, Mt. Vernon Fire, Lisbon Fire, Martelle Fire, Lisbon-Mt. Vernon Ambulance and Anamosa Ambulance, per KWWL. The crash remains under investigation, and no additional details about what led to the collision have been released.

Second Highway 1 Crash This Year in Linn County

Monday's wreck marks at least the second reported injury crash on Highway 1 in Linn County this year. Back in May, two people were injured in a crash at Highway 1 and Cedar River Road, according to KCRG's earlier report. In that incident, a driver attempting to turn onto Cedar River Road from northbound Highway 1 failed to yield and struck a southbound vehicle, the sheriff's office said at the time. The driver and a passenger in the southbound vehicle were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, far less severe than the extrications reported Monday.
