One person is dead after a shooting overnight in the Hickory Hill area of Memphis, and police are still working to piece together exactly what happened. No suspect has been named, and investigators have not released a motive.
The Memphis Police Department is investigating the shooting, according to Action News 5, which reported that officers were on the scene of a deadly shooting on Mt. Moriah Extended near Kirby Parkway in Hickory Hill. The station reported that the call came in around 2:47 a.m. Monday, and that one person had been fatally shot.
A separate report from Fox 13 offered a different account of the timeline and location, stating that a man died after a shooting in Hickory Hill early Sunday morning, according to MPD. That station reported that officers responded to a man-down call in the area of Flowering Peach Drive and Mendenhall Road around 12:34 a.m., and that the man was later pronounced dead on the scene. The two reports differ on both the time and the cross streets involved, and it is not clear from available information whether they describe the same shooting.
What Investigators Haven't Said
Beyond the basic fact that one person died, little else has been made public. No identity has been released for the victim, and police have not described a suspect or offered any indication of what led to the shooting. Those gaps leave Hickory Hill residents with more questions than answers for now.
This is not the first time this stretch of road has made headlines for violence. In November 2023, Memphis police responded to a shooting call around 12:45 a.m. in the 6200 block of Mt. Moriah Road Extension near Ridgeway Road, according to localmemphis.com. In that earlier case, officers found a man who had been shot; he was taken to Regional One Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. As with the current case, investigators in 2023 did not say what led to the shooting or release any information on suspects.
A Broader Picture of Homicide Investigations in Memphis
The circumstances of this latest shooting remain under investigation, and it is unclear how it will factor into the department's broader case-clearance efforts. The Memphis Police Department has reported that its Homicide Bureau achieved an 81% homicide clearance rate in the second quarter of 2026, which it described as a substantial increase compared with 47% during an earlier referenced period, per the department's own statement. That statistic offers some context for how the department has characterized its recent performance on homicide cases, though it says nothing about the outcome of this particular investigation.
For now, the overnight shooting in Hickory Hill remains an open case, with the Memphis Police Department yet to release the identity of the victim or any suspect information. Residents in the area are left waiting, much as they were after the 2023 shooting a few miles down the same road, for investigators to provide answers about what happened and why.
