Houston gets a fast-moving taste of fall Friday as a cold front pushes through, bringing a brief chance of showers and thunderstorms followed by cooler, drier air. Friday's forecast calls for a high of 70 degrees and partly cloudy skies. North winds will take over, and those winds, not the rain, will be the main weather story.
Morning Storm Chance Gives Way To Strong Winds
The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston says isolated showers and a possible storm could develop ahead of the front.
North winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph, with gusts potentially exceeding 35 mph during the day. A Wind Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. Friday until 1 a.m. Saturday for inland Harris County and nearby Montgomery and Walker counties, with gusts potentially reaching 40 mph.
Secure Loose Items Before The Front Arrives
The advisory could make driving more difficult for high-profile vehicles and may blow around unsecured outdoor objects, including Halloween decorations. Forecasters are also urging caution with outdoor burning because the combination of strong wind and dry air is raising fire danger across the region.
Friday night will be much cooler, with a low near 49 degrees as north winds diminish overnight. Offshore conditions will be rougher still, with a Gale Warning in effect for Gulf waters and seas building to 7 to 13 feet.
Sunny Weekend Brings Chilly Nights
Saturday looks sunny but breezy, with a high near 73 and north winds of 10 to 15 mph. Temperatures will fall to around 53 Saturday night before Sunday brings more sunshine and a high near 77.
The sharper temperature drop and newly issued wind alert are a substantive update to the earlier Hoodline forecast, which first flagged the approaching cold front. The warm-up returns next week, with highs near 77 Monday, 83 Tuesday, 86 Wednesday and 87 Thursday under mostly sunny to sunny skies.
