A 30-year-old Holly Springs man is behind bars facing two counts of attempted second-degree murder after a shooting left one victim fighting for his life and another nursing a gunshot wound to the hand. Tracey Wilborn was arrested Thursday, a day after the gunfire erupted in the 180 block of West Woodard Avenue, and he's now being held on $100,000 bond for each charge.
According to a Holly Springs Police Department statement relayed by TVMO News Network, the Wednesday shooting left two male victims injured — one with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his hand, and another who sustained multiple gunshot wounds and remains in critical condition. As reported by WREG, deputies said Wilborn was arrested and transported to the Marshall County Sheriff's Department following the shooting.
Officers with Holly Springs police and the Marshall County Sheriff's Department formally charged Wilborn with two counts of attempted second-degree murder on Thursday, corresponding to the two separate shooting victims, the same TVMO report notes. That detail clarifies what had initially been reported as a single charge, underscoring the scope of the case against him.
A Joint Law Enforcement Response
The arrest and ongoing investigation were carried out as a joint operation between Holly Springs police and the Marshall County Sheriff's Department's Violent Crimes Task Force, per the same account. That kind of inter-agency coordination isn't new to the county — local reporting by The South Reporter notes that the task force regularly partners with Holly Springs police on serious firearm calls, including a January 2025 incident that also produced multiple attempted murder and accessory charges.
Holly Springs sits as the county seat of Marshall County, with a population of roughly 6,402 residents as of 2025, according to U.S. Census Bureau data compiled by Data Commons. The surrounding county had an estimated population of 33,752 in 2024 and a median individual income of $29,224 in 2024.
What Wilborn Could Face If Convicted
Under Mississippi Code § 97-1-7(2), a conviction for attempted murder may carry life imprisonment if the jury fixes that penalty, or a court sentence of at least 20 years if the jury fails to agree on life, according to FindLaw. The state criminal code also classifies attempted murder as a “crime of violence” under Mississippi Code § 97-3-2, restricting parole or early release until at least 50% of the sentence is served, per Justia Law.
Authorities have reported that the investigation remains ongoing and that additional charges may be pending, according to WREG's reporting. The motive behind the shooting and the current medical status of the critically injured victim have not been disclosed.
