New Orleans starts Saturday, October 17, with clear skies and temperatures around 61 degrees, but the calm-looking morning comes with a serious catch: strong northeast winds. Gusts could reach 40 mph as the city warms to about 72 degrees, making this a bright but blustery fall day.
Wind Advisory Runs Through Saturday Afternoon
A Wind Advisory remains in effect for New Orleans and surrounding areas until 3 p.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service expects northeast winds of 15 to 20 mph, with frequent stronger gusts that could make driving harder for high-profile vehicles.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, including patio furniture, decorations and trash bins. Tree limbs could come down in the strongest gusts, and scattered power outages are possible, though no rain is expected.
Dry Air Raises Fire Weather Concerns
Dry conditions, ongoing drought and gusty winds are also creating elevated fire weather concerns across parts of southeast Louisiana. A Red Flag Warning is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in affected areas, so outdoor burning, sparks and unattended flames should be avoided.
The latest forecast sharpens the warning from Friday’s outlook, which had already flagged a blustery weekend for the region. Conditions should become less windy later Saturday, but the air will remain unusually dry for fire spread.
Sunny Stretch Turns Warmer Next Week
Sunday will stay sunny with a high near 72 and a low around 59, followed by another sunny day Monday near 73 degrees. Tuesday reaches about 76, with lighter northeast winds and clear skies continuing.
The warming trend becomes more noticeable by midweek, with highs near 79 Wednesday, 81 Thursday and 82 Friday. Overnight lows will mostly stay in the upper 50s and lower 60s, and the forecast currently carries no rain through Friday.
Boaters Face Rougher Conditions Offshore
Coastal waters will remain more hazardous than land areas, with Gale Warnings continuing through Saturday night before Small Craft Advisories take over. Anyone heading onto Lake Pontchartrain or nearby coastal waters should check conditions carefully and avoid venturing out in a small or inexperienced vessel.
