A Hughes County jury has convicted 38-year-old Brandon Michael Hughes on multiple felony charges tied to child sexual abuse, closing out a case that stretched on for years after Hughes left the state before his original trial date. Jurors found him guilty of first-degree rape involving a child under 14, lewd molestation, forcible oral sodomy, forcible sodomy, and possession of child pornography.
According to KOKH, Hughes was originally scheduled to stand trial in 2022, but he left Oklahoma before that proceeding could take place. Hughes County District Attorney Erik Johnson told the station that Hughes was eventually found in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in 2025 and brought back to Oklahoma to face the charges.
Jury Recommends Life Without Parole on Rape Count
Jurors recommended life without parole for the first-degree rape conviction and life imprisonment for the lewd molestation count, the station's report states. For the three remaining counts — forcible oral sodomy, forcible sodomy, and possession of child pornography — jurors recommended 20 years each. Formal sentencing has been set for December 15, 2026.
The case had been working its way through the Hughes County court system for some time before trial finally moved forward. A pretrial hearing in the matter was scheduled for March 3, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., according to the Holdenville News, which had earlier reported that Hughes faced charges including procuring, distributing, or possessing juvenile pornography, soliciting sexual conduct or communication with a minor by use of technology, first-degree rape of a victim under 14, two counts of forcible sodomy, and lewd molestation.
Victim Praised for Testimony
Assistant District Attorney Blayne Norman said the victim showed strength and determination throughout the process, according to the station. Erik Johnson also said the victim testified effectively despite what she had endured, according to the station's reporting.
Court records maintained locally also reflect part of the case against Hughes. The Hughes County Tribune's court-records listings include an entry for Hughes tied to a juvenile pornography case involving the procurement, production, distribution, or possession of pornography.
With the jury's verdict now in, the case moves toward its final stage in Hughes County, where a judge is expected to hand down a formal sentence on December 15.
