A black Bauer hockey bag packed with an 8-year-old child's gear disappeared from the Hyannis Youth & Community Center on Wednesday afternoon, and Barnstable Police now want the public's help putting a name to the man they say took it. Police said the bag was taken from the HYCC at about 2 p.m. on Oct. 28, 2026.
The Barnstable Police Department said it is seeking to identify the individual pictured in connection with the incident, according to capecod.com. The outlet reported that a male subject took the bag from the HYCC at approximately 2 p.m. that day, and that it contained hockey equipment belonging to an 8-year-old child.
Police asked anyone who recognizes the man or has information about the theft to contact Detective Sergeant Kyle Phelan or call the department's non-emergency line, the same report noted. Boston 25 News similarly reported that police are seeking the public's assistance identifying the man after surveillance footage showed him carrying the black Bauer bag out of the facility.
Where the Theft Happened
The Hyannis Youth & Community Center, located at 141 Bassett Lane in Hyannis, is a hub for local youth sports, including hockey programs that bring families and their gear through its doors regularly. The Hyannis Youth & Community Center lists its own phone number as (508) 790-6345 for those trying to reach the facility directly.
Anyone who recognizes the man from the surveillance footage or has information about the missing gear is asked to contact the Barnstable Police non-emergency line at (508) 778-3874. Detective Sergeant Kyle Phelan is leading the effort to identify the person seen leaving with the child's equipment.
A Separate Incident, Not Confirmed Connected
This is not the first time hockey gear has gone missing from a rink in the Hyannis area. A separate report from Hyannis News described an earlier case involving a 15-year-old who discovered his own hockey bag missing, a theft that a Barnstable patrolman resolved after reviewing security footage and recovering the bag within an hour. Nothing in the available reporting ties that earlier case to Wednesday's theft at the HYCC, and the two incidents involve different victims and circumstances.
For now, investigators are relying on the public to help put a name to the man caught on camera walking off with a young hockey player's equipment. Barnstable Police have not released additional details about the suspect's identity or whether anyone has been identified since the appeal went out.
