The Golden Corral at 19120 E. Valley View Parkway in Independence, Missouri, is serving its last buffet trays this weekend, closing for good after about 15 years in business. Managers at the location confirmed the shutdown is already underway, with the restaurant's final day of operation set for Sunday.
The closure was first reported by the Kansas City Star, which spoke with a diner and an employee on Friday, October 2, as word spread. One staffer told a customer who asked about the rumors swirling through the dining room, “Yes, we're closing.” Another diner reportedly posed the question directly: “So are the rumors true?” According to records and archives cited by the Star, the Independence location has operated for roughly 15 years.
Gift Cards and a Tight Deadline
The Kansas City Star advises Independence customers to spend down any remaining gift card balances before the week ending Sunday, since the store won't be around afterward to redeem them. The Kansas City Star reports that two Golden Corral locations remain open in the metro area, at 8800 N. Skyview Ave. and 13440 S. Blackbob Road in Olathe, according to employees there.
The Independence shutdown isn't an isolated case. Per the Star's reporting, Golden Corral is also closing several other locations across the country, including restaurants in Ohio, Illinois, Texas and Florida. Golden Corral itself has not filed for bankruptcy, the company is privately held, and it does not release financial reports, the Star notes — though the same report confirms that individual Golden Corral franchises have filed for bankruptcy, including one operator in Conroe, Texas. The Kansas City Star contacted Golden Corral's corporate office for comment but did not receive a response.
A 12,767-Square-Foot Building Hits the Market
The freestanding Independence building itself is a sizable piece of real estate: 12,767 square feet, built in 2011 on a 2.8-acre parcel, and now listed for sale or lease through Ferguson Properties, according to CommercialSearch. Missouri had 13 active Golden Corral locations as of June 2025, placing it among the top 10 states for the chain's footprint nationally, per data from ScrapeHero.
Franchise Bankruptcy Filings
The Conroe, Texas franchise mentioned in the Star's report isn't alone in its financial troubles. Court records reviewed by PacerMonitor show that Conroe Corral Murphy, LLC filed for Subchapter V Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July, drawing formal notices of appearance from Golden Corral Corporation itself. Another Texas operator, South Texas Corral LLC, filed for Chapter 11 in June 2025 listing just $150,000 in assets against $1.64 million in liabilities, according to TheStreet.
One Golden Corral franchisee, Platinum Corral LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to Nation's Restaurant News.
Shrinking Footprint, Experimental Spinoffs
Golden Corral operated 400 locations in 41 states and territories as of June 2025, per ScrapeHero's tracking data. Founded in 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina and now headquartered in Raleigh, Golden Corral remains privately held.
Corporate leadership has also experimented with concepts beyond the traditional all-you-can-eat format. The earlier fast-casual concept Homeward Kitchen closed its first iteration in February 2025, and Golden Corral Favorites opened roughly a year before the Sandhills Sentinel reported on it in May 2026. Even so, the company announced in April that it had six new buffet locations under active development across the United States and Puerto Rico, per a release distributed through PR Newswire — a sign that expansion and contraction are happening at the same time within the same brand.
For Independence regulars, the practical takeaway is simpler: the Valley View Parkway doors close this weekend, any lingering gift card balance needs to be spent beforehand, and the nearest remaining Golden Corral options in the metro are now in Kansas City and Olathe.
