A 66-year-old Iola woman is dead and a 15-year-old Beloit boy was taken to a Joplin hospital with serious injuries after their vehicles collided head-on on U.S. Highway 169 early Friday morning, just northeast of Humboldt. The crash happened around 6:40 a.m. and closed the busy highway for roughly four hours while investigators worked the scene.
According to KSN, the teen was driving north on the highway by himself when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a southbound SUV driven by Sherry Lynn McDown. McDown, of Iola, was killed in the crash. The teen was taken to Freeman West Health Center in Joplin, Missouri, where he was being treated for serious injuries, the station reported.
Separate reporting from KOAM News Now identifies the teen as Tyler Binder, 15, of Beloit, and says he was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado northbound when it crossed into the southbound lane and struck the Toyota Highlander head-on, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. KOAM reports Binder suffered suspected serious injuries and was transported to the hospital by emergency personnel.
