A burglary-suspect search in Jackson led officers to five juveniles in a car near Prospect Avenue early Oct. 20, where they recovered three firearms. Police say the teens, ages 15 to 17, were taken to the Juvenile Detention Center on charges that included weapons violations.

Officers found the car around 12:42 a.m. near the 1000 block of Prospect Avenue, with five juvenile males inside, according to WBBJ. Three teens were 16, one was 15 and one was 17. A search of the car turned up a Draco 7.62x39, a Springfield XD 9mm handgun and an AR-style 5.56 pistol.

The officers were looking for reported burglary suspects in the LANA area. The search began around 12:31 a.m.; while checking the area, officers saw someone dressed in all black moving through an alley between Walnut Street and Roland Avenue. The person ran, prompting officers nearby to search surrounding blocks, the station reported.

Guns Seized, Teens Sent to Juvenile Detention

All three weapons were seized on the scene, and all five juveniles were transported to the Juvenile Detention Center facing various charges, including weapons violations.

The incident comes as Jackson police describe concerns about groups of young people carrying weapons while committing crimes. Earlier this month, Jackson Police Department Captain Chris Chestnut described the trend as “large groups of armed juveniles,” according to the station's coverage.

Officials Point to Social Media, Push Community Response

Chestnut has also cited social media as a factor, warning that behavior framed as a prank online “can turn into someone getting hurt or a serious criminal charge,” according to the earlier report.

City leaders have been pressing for responses that go beyond arrests. Jackson City Councilman Johnny Dodd has pushed for more recreation and activities aimed at giving young people positive outlets to stay engaged, according to the station's reporting. The overnight recovery near Prospect Avenue adds another data point to a trend officials say requires both enforcement and community intervention, though police have not detailed what specific weapons charges the five teens are facing or whether any of them will be prosecuted.

Recreation Programs and a Separate Jackson Case

Madison County Parks and Recreation says it organizes county-wide leisure activities including youth football, cheerleading and wheelchair basketball. Its program information does not establish whether those activities specifically serve the LANA area near Prospect Avenue. In a separate Jackson case, WBBJ reported that a Madison County jury convicted two men in September 2026 in connection with a November 2024 shooting that killed one teenager and wounded another. That case involved a fatal shooting, not the Prospect Avenue incident.
