A liquor store that has anchored 741 Centre St. in Jamaica Plain for generations could soon be wearing a new name. A Boston licensing notice shows that Blanchard's Liquors has petitioned to transfer its all-alcohol retail package-store license to JP Kappy's, Inc., doing business as Kappy's, setting up a potential rebrand at the longtime neighborhood address.
According to Universal Hub, the application for the Jamaica Plain store was filed by the Patel family, and it references the store's size along with an 11 p.m. closing time. The underlying licensing filing, viewable through a Boston public notice, identifies the license holder as Blanchard's Liquors at 741 Centre St., license number LB-101875, and states the holder has petitioned to transfer that license to JP Kappy's, Inc.
Universal Hub's report notes that the Elder and Corey family, which has owned Boston-area Blanchard's stores for generations, has been selling off its stores in recent months. Separately, the outlet reports that the Sharon family is buying the Blanchard's in West Roxbury and plans to rename it Kappy's as well, and that the Sharon family will appear before Boston's licensing board to seek approval to buy the Jamaica Plain Blanchard's and rename it Kappy's. Universal Hub also reports that the Blanchard's in Revere is slated to become a Kappy's.
What Kappy's Brings to the Block
Kappy's describes itself as a fourth-generation Massachusetts family business, saying on its website that it was founded in 1940. The company says its stores stock thousands of wine, spirits and beer options across a range of price points, per the same page.
The application for the Jamaica Plain store does not address what will happen to the store's large neon sign, according to Universal Hub's report.
Hearing Set for Next Wednesday
Boston Licensing Board hearings are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. next Wednesday, with the proposed Blanchard's sale listed 17th on the agenda, per Universal Hub's reporting. Under Massachusetts law, local licensing authorities may approve the transfer of a license from one location to another, according to Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 138, Section 23.
