A Missouri prison inmate has admitted to beating a corrections officer so badly that the guard spent six days in a coma and may not be able to return to work. Gavin Syring, 29, pleaded guilty on October 1 to first-degree assault causing serious physical injury to a special victim and to violence against a Department of Corrections employee, stemming from a brutal 2022 attack at Jefferson City Correctional Center.

According to KXEO, Syring's formal sentencing is scheduled for December 15 at 2 p.m. The plea resolves the criminal case more than four years after the assault, though the length of any new sentence — and whether it will run alongside or on top of the 18-year term Syring is already serving — remains unknown. As reported by KWOS, Syring is currently held at Potosi Correctional Center.

The July 2022 Attack on Officer Kent Riley

The assault took place on July 19, 2022, after Syring refused an order from Corrections Officer Kent Riley to return to his cell. Per Prison Legal News, Syring knocked Riley to the floor and repeatedly punched and kicked him. The attack left Riley unconscious and in a coma for six days, with injuries to his head, brain, side and hip that may keep him from working, the outlet's reporting on the case's medical fallout notes.

Following the attack, state correctional authorities transferred Syring out of Jefferson City to Potosi Correctional Center. The move came as Syring was already serving an 18-year sentence for armed robbery in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

A $2 Million Civil Judgment

Beyond the criminal case, Riley and his wife, Jennifer Riley, pursued a separate legal path. In December 2022, the couple won a $2 million civil court judgment against Syring in Cole County Circuit Court for the permanent damages inflicted during the beating, according to the station's report on the case.

A Recurring Safety Concern Inside JCCC

A separate incident at Jefferson City Correctional Center also involved violence against staff. At an Oct. 1 ceremony, state officials honored a JCCC sergeant with the Director's Award of Valor after she intervened in a November 2023 incident in which an inmate punched her and stabbed another officer with a 7.5-inch metal shank, according to the Missouri Department of Corrections.

With Syring's sentencing set for December, the extent of his additional prison time — and whether the Rileys' judgment will ever be collected — remains to be seen.
