Okayama Kobo Bakery & Cafe in Honolulu is going full Kuromi this month, rolling out a themed food-and-beverage menu and exclusive merchandise tied to Sanrio's mischievous black-and-purple character. The collaboration runs from Friday through October 31, giving fans nearly a month to get their hands on the limited-time offerings.
According to KHON2, the bakery is kicking things off with a launch event Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. held in front of the store. The station reports the collaboration includes both a specially designed menu and limited merchandise built around Kuromi's signature look.
Okayama Kobo's official concept page states that its bread is handmade using 100% Hokkaido flour and dough free of additives and preservatives. The same page credits founder Tsunetaka Kawakami with the bakery's origins, noting he helped open more than 200 bakery locations across Japan through a consulting business before the brand made its way to Hawaii.
What the Collab Includes
The themed rollout pairs Kuromi's cult following with Okayama Kobo's bread-forward menu, mixing food and drink items with merchandise exclusive to the collaboration, per the station's report. Specific menu items, prices and merchandise designs haven't been detailed beyond that description.
Kuromi collaborations tend to draw a crowd wherever they land. A 2020 anniversary cafe tie-in for the character featured a ten-item menu split between three food dishes, four desserts and three drinks, according to FUN! JAPAN. In December 2024, Hypebeast reported that a separate collaboration between Hypebeans and Sanrio would debut beginning December 19, pairing limited-edition merch with a redesigned cafe space.
Weekend Launch Event Details
For Honolulu fans hoping to catch the debut in person, the launch event runs Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. right outside the bakery's storefront. The full collaboration, including the themed menu and merchandise, stays available through the end of October.
